Former President Donald Trump dominated a 2024 straw poll conducted at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Dallas, Texas, indicating that he remains the first choice for the Republican party's presidential nominee, crushing Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) and others.
In the numbers released on Saturday, Trump came in first with an overwhelming 69 percent of attendees supporting the former president. DeSantis came in a distant second place with 24 percent, while Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) took third with a measly 2 percent.
When asked who the attendees would prefer to be the nominee if Trump chose not to run in 2024, DeSantis-who did not attend the conference in Dallas-faired much better grabbing 65 percent of respondents.

The results of the poll were announced from the CPAC Texas main stage approximately two hours before Trump was scheduled to speak at the conference. It should be noted that the straw poll is not a scientific survey, considering it is limited to solely CPAC attendees and may not be representative of the Republican Party at large.
CPAC has been a whirlwind of newsworthy moments, between the live performance art of a January 6th Capitol rioter crying in a fake jail cell, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban receiving a standing ovation after declaring that marriage should only be shared between a man and a woman, and speeches from Cruz, Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), and other influential Republicans.
While neither Trump nor DeSantis have officially announced their intentions to run for president in 2024, rumors have been circulating that both are gearing up for a campaign. The Florida Governor held a major event last month, packed with key Republican donors and governors, with many under the impression that DeSantis is genuinely considering the idea.
In a different new poll released on Saturday, President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris both beat Trump, with Biden beating DeSantis even worse.

Now ask yourself, does a poll showing Trump to be an easy winner among the Republican base (CPAC) discourage him or encourage him to run for the 2024 nomination? He loves it when people show their support of him, and an easy win at CPAC can only convince him that he could win in 2024.

NEW POLL: Biden and VP Kamala Harris Both Beat Trump – And Biden Beats DeSantis Worse
tommy-christopher 3-3 minutes 8/6/2022
President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris both beat former President Donald Trump in a new poll — and Biden beats Florida Governor Ron DeSantis worse than he beats Trump.
Last week, White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield pushed back when asked about a negative CNN poll result by pointing out that President Biden still beat Trump head-to-head.
In that CNN/SSRS poll , Democratic-leaning voters were asked “Who do you think the Democratic Party should nominate as the party’s candidate for president in 2024?”
Twenty-five percent said “Nominate Biden in 2024,” while 75 percent responded “Nominate a different candidate in 2024.”
This week, a new Yahoo! News/YouGov poll that shows a Democratic advantage in a close race no matter who the nominee is.
Head-to-head, Biden beats Trump by two points, 41 percent to 39 percent. And despite heavy buzz for DeSantis, Biden beats the Florida governor by an even wider margin in this poll, 40% to 36%.
The survey did not include a head-to-head between VP Harris and DeSantis, but the veep does beat Trump by a point, 42 percent to 41 percent.
But as Yahoo News West Coast Correspondent Andrew Romano notes , voters have a rather fatalistic view of the Trump/Biden matchup:
One interesting note from the crosstabs: VP Harris did slightly better against Trump with Fox News viewers (16%) than President Biden (13%).

Trump Calls Himself ‘The Most Persecuted Person in the History of Our Country’
michael-luciano 2-3 minutes 8/5/2022
Former President Donald Trump held a rally in Waukesha, Wisconsin on Friday night, where he deemed himself “the most persecuted person” in United States history.
Yep, he did.
“We are standing up against some of the most menacing forces, entrenched interests, and vicious opponents our people have ever seen,” Trump told the crowd. “A friend of mine recently said that I was the most persecuted person in the history of our country. When I thought about it, I actually felt that he may very well be right.”
Trump pointed to the Mueller investigation into his 2016 campaign’s potential ties to the Russian government. The former president called it the “Russia Russia Russia scam” that the media knew was “fake news.”
“This could only happen to me,” he said. “Who has been through anything like this? Seriously?”
He then listed some of his accomplishments as president and bashed the Jan. 6 committee investigating his role in the Capitol riot, calling it “the unselect committee” as is his wont.
“So where does this stop?” he went on. “Our biggest threat remains the sick, sinister, and evil people from within our country, the same people that we’re talking about. Never forget everything this corrupt establishment is doing to me is all about preserving their power and control over the American people – you. They want to damage me in any form so I can no longer represent the hardworking citizens of our country.”
Trump told rally-goers he’s fighting for them.
“If I renounce my beliefs, if I agreed to stay silent, if I stayed home or if I stayed in my basement like Joe Biden did, the persecution would stop immediately,” he said.
“That’s what they want me to do and it would all be very nice. I’d have a very nice life. But i can’t do that and I will not do that because I love our country and the people of our country. I love them so much. And I’m not doing this for me because I had a very good in luxurious life before entering the wonderful world of politics. I’m doing this for you and it’s my honor to do it.”

CPAC doesn't represent the average Republican. If nominated he will lose bigly
I agree. I hope we are correct.
I agree also. This one consisted of a bunch of nutter extremists.
It"s all about name recognition
Of course more people in Texas know more of Trump than they do DeSantis.
That will certainly begin to change after the mid terms.
