Top Republicans privately fear midterms will become Trump referendum
By: Mike Allen (Axios)

Top Republicans' biggest private fear — that November's midterms will turn on public opinion about former President Trump, not inflation and crime — is unfolding across the political landscape.
Why it matters: Trump is dominating the news, picking Trump-like candidates in primaries — and shaping the views and rhetoric of elected officials, and those hoping to become one.
That's why Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is telling people his party is blowing a golden opportunity to win the Senate.
- It's also why Republicans no longer feel so confident of a landslide in the House.
What we're hearing: The Trump document case is likely to remain in the news for months.
- I'm told there are lots more investigative threads to pull before an indictment — including interviewing Trump lawyers about what they said about the classified documents he kept.
The bottom line: GOP midterm candidates — who want to talk solely about the prices of gas and groceries — now must contend with background music that once again is Trump, Trump, Trump.

It may come down to how engaged the Democrats can make young people.
… and the younguns don’t show up for the little elections. They won’t even show up as thanks for the $10k.
That, of course, is the Democrats plan. Can't talk about the economy or any popular achievements and their radical agenda can't be talked about, so Trump Trump Trump is the plan. Will be after he dies, too. It's no coincidence the J6 committee and the DOJ are firing on all cylinders in the run up to the election.
It's good politics, in that Democrats are rabid on the topic and the people who love Trump aren't as radicalized and not as likely to vote when he's not on the ballot. Maybe it will work for an another election . But at some point, as inevitably happens, people will get tired of Democrats crying wolf and hold them accountable for their actual governance, which means the Republicans will be back in power.
You act like the Republicans have no complicity in their problems, which is hilarious.
They have had about 22 months to throw Trump under the bus after the 2020 election, and havent even come close.
Sure. And Jan. 6th was a normal tourist day at the Capitol. Got it.
