How many people ever thought they would live to see the day when a US president would be accused of seeking to overthrow the US government ?

It sounds like the plot of a political thriller novel. Although the reality facing the nation does not contain much of a thriller aspect which would likely include murders, assassinations and other assorted gunplay, the truth is probably more bizarre than any novel or movie could dream up. A tv game show host/ con man grifter/ and malignant narcissist seized power in 2016 on the coat tails of white grievance "patriots" who then proceeded to ignore and then validate every strange, egotistical, and in some cases evil, move he made. He held rallies that drew crowds in the tens of thousands, many of the attendees fawning over him like he was the second coming.

But 2023 will bring a new reality. The Jan 6 committee of the House of Representatives will later today list formal allegations of insurrection committed by Trump in a doomed effort to stay in office for a second, unelected, term.  A US president formally accused of trying to destroy our government?  Never you say.

Never say never when MAGA is involved.

(Bloomberg) -- The House committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack will complete its 17-month probe with votes Monday on recommendations for the first-ever criminal prosecution of a former president, with offenses including insurrection, according to people familiar with plans.

We are nearing the end of the beginning.

The day we thought would never come, crimes against the American people committed by Trump leading to criminal indictments , may be in the almost foreseeable future.

I certainly hope so, will believe when I see it. Too many politicians, in all parties, are never held accountable. Lots of talk of accountability, no action.

We'll see how far this goes.

From the article:

"The extent of the criminal referrals, and who will be targeted, will be made clear on Monday as the committee is expected to release a separate, shorter report on the matter. Any referrals would be a largely symbolic move, though , as it's ultimately up to federal prosecutors whether to pursue charges."

The main allegations against Trump have been public news for months, at least.

None of them have been refuted by any of the "conservatives" on Newstalkers. All we hear is that the committee is biased.  Facts are facts.

Who here wants to be Trumps defense lawyer and have to show why he is innocent?  None of you do because it is a fool's errand.

This explains a lot, A defense lawyer doesn't have to show he is innocent, the prosecution has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he is guilty to jury that doesn't suffer from TDS, and he has to prove that to all the jurors.

What charges did the committee level?  I can answer that however, none.  They make allegations and refer to the DOJ but it's the DOJ that brings charges.  You know that, so I would caution that you not conflate things.  There are a lot of allegations made during the hearings and while I will admit that what Trump did was a lot of wrong, I am not sure if it was criminally illegal.  We will find out in the end but I suspect there will not be charges from the DOJ in this.  I still believe they stand a stronger case for obstruction with the classified documents and even that's out of the normal.  So we wait and see.

shed a tear -

People who know Trump said the need for attention that has been a driving force throughout his life has not dwindled since he left the office that shone on him   the world’s brightest spotlight. That has pushed him to seek adulation from a court of supplicants who pay for access to Trump at his Mar-a-Lago and Bedminster, N.J., clubs, where he has spent   most of his time.

“The appetite for attention hasn’t waned, but that’s where he gets it now,” a Trump confidant said. “The networks don’t carry his rallies. He doesn’t get interviews anymore. He can’t stand under the wing of Air Force One and gaggle [with reporters] for an hour.”

Trump   rarely agrees to interviews these days with independent journalists that could become confrontational; several advisers noted he recently granted   an interview   with NewsNation’s   Markie Martin, the sister of his longtime press aide, Margo Martin.

On a typical day since leaving office, advisers said, Trump gets up early, makes phone calls, watches television and reads some newspapers. Then, six days a week, he plays 18 or sometimes 27 holes of golf at one of his courses. After lunch, he changes into a suit from his golf shirt and slacks and shows up in the office above the Mar-a-Lago ballroom or, when he is in New Jersey, a similar office in a cottage near the Bedminster club’s pool.

By evening, Trump emerges for dinner, surrounded most nights   by adoring club members who stand and applaud at his appearance; they stand and applaud again after he finishes his meal and   retires for the night. He often orders special meals from the kitchen and spends time curating the music wafting over the crowd, frequently pushing for the volume to be raised or lowered based on his mood. In the Oval Office, Trump had a button he could push to summon an aide to bring him a Diet Coke or snacks. Now, he just yells out commands to whichever employee is in earshot.

The Pelosi partisan TDS shit show finally coming to a close? It is well past time; the conclusion was never in any doubt. Their goal from the beginning was to get Trump- they weren't shy about saying it.

It will be wonderful to see those committee members that are actually returning to the House being stripped of all committee assignments by whomever the Republicans pick as the new Speaker. Hopefully McCarthy (or whomever) will have the balls to strip Pelosi as well. Payback for her last 4 years of partisan rule of the House; and breaking all of the Speaker standards.

As for Trump. Democrats had better hope Garland doesn't screw the pooch by bringing charges too damn early. Democrats have no hope of retaining the Presidency with Brandon the Human Fuck Up Machine running again; unless Trump is the Republican nominee.

Recession is still coming; and Brandon and the Democrats have no damn answers except to spend more damn money and threaten to increase taxes.

“Please refute ANY of the allegations against Trump.”

The only refutation will be the lack of a conviction. Examples to surely follow.

These are unprecedented times where prosecutors and courts are unsure how to proceed against an ex-president even though the mountain of evidence is incontrovertible.

The prosecution needs to proceed, lest a smarter and even more sinister office holder seizes the opportunity to further exploit the system.

No man or woman is above the law, and the ‘law and order’ party should be the first in line to call out and condemn such obvious malfeasance.

Jan 6 Committee To Say Donald Trump Committed The Crime Of Insurrection

I love how this is presented as actual news that has recently just come to light, rather than a known and foregone conclusion that could literally have been published the moment the creation of the committee was announced. It wouldn't have made any difference had the subject been whether Trump was responsible for the death of Archduke Ferdinand or the extinction of the dinosaurs, we all could have written a news story about what the committee would conclude about it before they even had their first meeting.

And, no, JR, I'm not going to bother refuting anything because there's nothing there to refute except narrative. Who's going to waste time trying to argue with what someone wants to be true? You don't seem to understand this.

So John, It's not our Job to defend trump from those suffering from TDS like the committee members, It is Merrick Garlands Job to prosecute him for all the crimes you have said he committed.

What's more telling is your refusal to address why Garland hasn't filed charges. Why John? why hasn't Garland stepped up?

That's a good point, George, but probably irrelevant. Whether or not Trump is guilty or innocent isn't the point, for the people with JR's ideology. What is relevant for them is that Trump is perpetually presented as the people's biggest enemy, along with the people who don't demonstrate outright hate for the man. I doubt they actually want to see Trump behind bars because he would lose most of his value to them as "a clear and present danger to democracy" they can use to manipulate society. Trump is actually a part of the machinery the Left depends on to move their plans forward for society.

It also helps tremendously that Trump is easy to hate with his narcissistic and bombastic personality. It serves their purposes perfectly that he always seems to slip through their fingers, which causes the Left's base to hate him even more, adding fuel to their fire, which they can direct toward their political enemies.

So John, who does the facts back up? If trump committed crimes, surely Garland wouldn't need Adam Shiff to produce the evidence for him, Would he? Is he so incompetent that he needs a liar like Shiff to do his work for him?  It appears to this point the facts are.

1. Trump didn't commit a crime

2. Garland is so incompetent he can't figure out how to prosecute him after almost 2 years?

3. The mythical unicorn ate Garlands evidence.

True, but Trump added a lot of milage to his usefulness by declaring his candidacy in two ways. The first and foremost, and why the Dems aren't going to be sending Trump to prison anytime soon, is that if/when DeSantis declares candidacy it will likely cause issues between DeSantis supporters and Trump supporters. Who knows how that will affect 2024? How many die hard Trump supporters might say away from the voting booth if DeSantis wins the nomination?

The second is that the I Hate Trump train doesn't stop on a dime and the Dems don't know who's going to be the actual Republican nominee any more than anyone else does. It would seem a no brainer that DeSantis would be the better choice for Republicans for 2024 but Trump shouldn't be underestimated. The Dems will likely wait to see which way the wind blows before making too big a shift.
