Russian media outlets were caught out by a false claim that King Charles III died on Sunday, after a popular Telegram channel boosted a faked announcement.
The hoax statement, supposedly issued by Buckingham Palace on official letterhead dated March 18th and featuring the royal crest, said: "The King passed away unexpectedly yesterday afternoon."

"We are pleased to confirm that the King continues to fulfil his work duties and attend to private affairs," a Buckingham Palace spokesperson told Tass, the Russian news agency.
The Ukrainian Embassy in London also issued a statement to X to declare the news "fake."

The hoax was reportedly first disseminated by Baza and Mash, two widely-followed Russian Telegram channels, before being echoed by major Russian news platforms like Gazeta.ru and Sputnik, stirring confusion.
This incident emerges amid heightened speculation and online buzz regarding the Royal Family, fueled by the Princess of Wales' recent withdrawal from public appearances due to health issues and the recent revelation that King Charles is being treated for an undisclosed form of cancer.
Long live the king !
Kind of makes you wonder what kind of capabilities Russian media has to verify news stories
