GURNEE, Ill. (WLS) --  Multiple suburban police departments are warning the community about a game high school seniors are playing, called "senior assassins."

On Tuesday, a group of seniors wearing ski masks went into a restaurant with water guns that looked like firearms, according to the Gurnee Police Department

They were targeting other students who were eating and tried to spray them with water.

A concealed carry holder was in the restaurant at the time and mistook the situation for a genuine threat.

Nobody was injured, but police warn the situation could have escalated quickly.

Arlington Heights, Bartlett, St. Charles police and Homewood School District 153 also issued warnings.

The "senior assassins" game has gone viral across the country on social media. In the game, players get assigned a random target they must "tag" with a water gun.

At times, rules specify teams can't play the game during school hours or on school property, Arlington Heights police said.

"One such call resulted in a significant police response based on a homeowner reporting a 'man with a gun' running through their residential yard," police  said .

The Gurnee Police Department reminded the public that the depiction of firearms, whether real or fake may instill fear among the public.

"Incidents like these may warrant disorderly conduct charges, as they often cause feelings of being alarmed and disturbed by others," Gurnee police said.

St. Charles police shared photos of water guns that appear to be hyper-realistic.

They seem like Darwin Award candidates.

Hopefully it won't be a plain clothes cop or a concealed carry person. jrSmiley_78_smiley_image.gif

We’re turning into Idiocracy as a society.  I blame social media and reality tv.

Perhaps our past education system has a part.

It's all fun and games until someone dies.

Used to play pro paintball and we had a team rule that anybody shooting their guns outside of designated areas (in public) would be off the team.

The TSA took them seriously too and we had to mark our bags with "UNLOADED FIREARMS" stickers whenever we flew to a tournament.

What with all of the CCW folk out there these days, it's only a matter of time until one of these stupid kids gets shot for real.

Read awhile ago that someone pulling a prank similar to this has already died.  Memory is kinda fuzzy but basically some prankster walked up to a group of people in a parking lot brandishing a fake gun and some CCW holder shot him dead.  The police used the pranksters friends videa in the investigation and no charges were filed against the shooter.

And another Darwin award contender was weeded out of the gene pool

I and a friend did this to another friend for a laugh. The difference was our water guns did not look anything like the real thing and we did not do this in a public area.
