"These asinine comments not only diminish the significance of our nation’s highest award for valor, but also crassly characterizes the sacrifices of those who have risked their lives above and beyond the call of duty." - VFW National Commander Al Lipphardt

VFW Admonishes Former President for Medal of Honor Remarks

3-3 minutes

The following is a message from VFW National Commander Al Lipphardt

WASHINGTON —   “On Thursday, former President Donald Trump spoke at an event where he made some flippant remarks about the Medal of Honor and the heroes who have received it. In the video that has circulated online and   in the media , the former president was recognizing Miriam Adelson in the audience who he awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom during his time in office. As he described the medal as the civilian version of the Medal of Honor, he went on to opine that the Medal of Freedom was “much better” than the military’s top award, because those awarded the latter are, in his words, “ … either in very bad shape because they’ve been hit so many times by bullets or they’re dead.” He continued by comparing Miriam to MoH recipients saying, “She gets it and she’s a healthy beautiful woman. They are rated equal.”

These asinine comments not only diminish the significance of our nation’s highest award for valor, but also crassly characterizes the sacrifices of those who have risked their lives above and beyond the call of duty.

When a candidate to serve as our military’s commander-in-chief so brazenly dismisses the valor and reverence symbolized by the Medal of Honor and those who have earned it, I must question whether they would discharge their responsibilities to our men and women in uniform with the seriousness and discernment necessary for such a powerful position. It is even more disappointing when these comments come from a man who already served in this noble office and should frankly already know better.

While the Presidential Medal of Freedom maybe our nation’s highest civilian award, the Medal of Honor is more sacred as it represents the gallantry and intrepidity of courageous and selfless service members, often at the cost of grievous wounds and even their lives. It’s because of our Medal of Honor recipients that great Americans like Miriam Adelson have the freedom to live to their fullest potential and make such lasting contributions to our great nation.

We would like to remind Mr. Trump that the 12 times he had the honor of awarding the Medal of Honor as president of the United States, those were heroes not of his own choosing. He bestowed those medals on behalf of Congress, representing all Americans of a grateful nation. We hold the donation of their lives in service to our country in the highest esteem, and so should he.”

These are NOT left-wing troll accounts. These are hardcore Trump supporters. This was a huge unforced error. #MedalofHonor

Trump pretends like he supports the military and veterans, but that's all it is - a pretense.

Why in the world would anyone vote for someone found liable for sexual assault, liable for fraud, is a convicted felon, tried to prevent the peaceful transfer of power following an election loss, thinks he can assault women any time he wants (Grab 'em by the pussy), has bankrupted his businesses six times, refuses to pay workers and contractors he hires, cozies up to and praises murderous dictators, disrespects the military, veterans and gold star families and is a serial liar?  It's an act of depravity.

Sooner or later he's going to go too far (in my opinion that happened about 8 years ago) piss off some of his followers (like VFW members) and lose in a landslide.

If he's going to lose, and hopefully it will be by a landslide, it had better be this time.

I predict that his big mouth is going to lose him another election. At this point I simply don't care anymore.

He continued by comparing Miriam to MoH recipients saying, “She gets it and she’s a healthy beautiful woman. They are rated equal.”

No they are not rated equal. It is appalling that Donald 'needs' for them to be equal in his head for his purposes. Also, it's appalling that he "thought this through" enough (on what occasion?) to fix his lips to state it—publicly.

Here is what is bad about this:

Public Law No: 113-12 (06/03/2013)

(This measure has not been amended since it was introduced. The summary of that version is repeated here.)

Stolen Valor Act of 2013 - Amends the federal criminal code to rewrite provisions relating to fraudulent claims about military service to subject to a fine, imprisonment for not more than one year, or both an individual who, with intent to obtain money, property, or other tangible benefit, fraudulently holds himself or herself out to be a recipient of:

    • a Congressional Medal of Honor,
    • a distinguished-service cross,
    • a Navy cross,
    • an Air Force cross,
    • a silver star,
    • a Purple Heart,
    • a Combat Infantryman's Badge,
    • a Combat Action Badge,
    • a Combat Medical Badge,
    • a Combat Action Ribbon,
    • a Combat Action Medal, or
    • any replacement or duplicate medal for such medal as authorized by law.
  •

Donald instigates this Medal of Freedom recipient in a discussion she did not ask for. . . and as a donor to his campaigns in the past and now. . . does not deserve. There is a law involved in actions people can take surrounding military service awards, such that a former president should not be doing anything (or stating anything) that would seek to 'marginalize' these high achievement awards in the minds and hearts of our nation's people.

In attempting to flatter Ms. Adelson, he, Donald 'flattened' the Medal of Honor by attempting to 'level' civic service and philanthropic giving to military loss of life for one's country.

Donald did this in the most self-serving of ways.  Why as weird as it may sound. . . it strikes me that Donald may wish to receive the Medal of Freedom one day for himself—preferably issued by none other than himself

Donald's comment has done damage to the status of the Medal of Honor. No self-respecting military personnel or veteran can receive this esteem medal from Donald ever again. Indeed, some of the recipients of the Medal of Honor during Donald's administration will not be able to help feeling 'jaded' by this stupid, empty-headed set of remarks by this former president.

Who in the hell (in their proper mind) would openly compare a civilian medal to a military medal. Who! A president! A former president!  Of all people - REALLY!!!!

What an achievement for a Republican presidential candidate to piss off the VFW.

What an achievement for a Republican presidential candidate to piss off the VFW.

Yet, Trump was able to accomplish this with little effort, once again proving that he is SOS (Stuck on Stupid)
