The East Coast Whines
One of the striking things about watching the convention last night was how much whining accumulated on twitter over the fact that the speakers ran long, apparently intruding on the sleep patterns of people who were both up watching it and commenting on it on twitter.
There were a lot of comments bemoaning that Biden's speech didnt wind up until after midnight eastern time, which is a strained complaint from a time zone where the local nightly news doesnt start , every day, until 11pm and Jimmy Kimmel and the other late night shows dont end, every night, until 12 :30, lets call it after midnight. And the venerable Saturday Night Live ends at 1 am Eastern time.
But let the Democratic convention opening night extend a few minutes past midnight est and you would have thought a whole region of the country was being tortured with sleep deprivation.
Then there were the concerned souls who said it was "disrespectful" to Joe Biden to leave him swinging in the air until just before 11:30 eastern , which was when he began his speech. Funny, Biden didnt seem to mind. Maybe he was happy to prove he can function when he gets close to that mythical 3 am time when the world is supposedly in the nuclear danger zone. In any case he gave an energetic speech with only very occasional verbal fumbles.
In two thirds of the country Biden started speaking before 10:30, or earlier in the mountain and pacific time zones , and this includes the huge population centers of southern and northern California , all of Texas, and Illinois, also high population states.
The number of pundits who complained about the time was alarming , given that Biden finished only about 10 minutes after Trump finished his speech at the GOP convention a few weeks ago. I dont recall any of these pundits and tv creatures complaining that Trump was disrespected by his late night appearance.
The eastern time zone is certainly a prominent part of America , but believe it or not makes up a little less than half of the US population , which means that for the majority of Americans it was NOT after midnight when Biden finished speaking. But you never would have known that from the punditry.
East coast bias is a real thing, most noticeable over the years in sports and weather coverage. Now we can add political convention speeches.
It is hard sometimes to hear the left coast drone over the east coast whine.
No doubt.
If that is all they can complain about.
Twitter is dead. X is on it's way.
"In any case he gave an energetic speech with only very occasional verbal fumbles."
Yep, the same angry old man, yelling and mumbling and slurring his incoherent words.
Say goodbye Joe, out to pasture you go. And as Roy Rogers used to say...."May the good Lord take a liken' to ya"
