For the sake of clarification (and also because it bugs the beejeezus out of me) the term is "half-staff" not half-mast. If trmp had ever really had any respect for this country and our flag he would know that.
If you are on a ship, that pole on which the flag flies is called a mast. So for ships lowering their flags to honor the death of a government official, it's appropriately called "half-mast." If that pole is stuck in the ground or attached to a building, then it is "half-staff." Either way, it means the same thing.

Trump cares nothing for tradition. Someone will raise the flags at the Inauguration to keep him happy.

Half staff is used almost exclusively in the US, the entire world uses half mast.
In the Navy, it is referred to as half mast.
I believe Coast Guard too.,

Literally everywhere outside the US with the exception of Canada it is half mast, no matter where the flag is.
