Schumer, Meng vow to pass COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act as anti-Asian violence grows in NYC
I dare any Senator to vote against this legislation, and if they do, shame on them

Oh, look, Asian-Americans get their very own hate crime bill.  Democrats are showing they care by doing absolutely nothing other than playing racially tinged divisive politics.

For those who don't know (or care) these attacks against Asian-Americans are already hate crimes.  Perhaps failure to treat them as hate crimes is systemic racism?  Maybe treating civil rights as a Blacks-only club is based on Black privilege?

And these sympathetic Democrats have tied Asian-Americans to the COVD-19 pandemic perhaps as a way to encourage more hate crimes.  Ambulance chasing lawyers really know how to create more business for themselves.

The feds need more tools to crack down on anti-Asian hate crimes, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Rep. Grace Meng, both Democrats from New York, said Monday in Koreatown in midtown Manhattan.

The Dems were pushing for legislation from Meng that aims to encourage people to report hate crimes.

"I dare any Senator to vote against this legislation, and if they do, shame on them," Schumer told a crowd of about 30 people at Broadway and W. 32nd St., vowing to get the Senate version of the bill passed by 5 p.m. Monday.

Meng's "COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act" would require the Department of Justice to speed up hate crime investigations, provide guidance to local cops on reporting hate crimes and work with the Department of Health and Human Services on best practices for keeping racist language out of COVID info from the government.

Meng and Schumer said the legislation would pave the way for relief to communities on edge from an alarming streak of hate crimes — about 40 Asian New Yorkers had been victimized by hate crimes as of mid-April, according to NYPD stats, with an unknown number of incidents believed to be unreported.

"Asian Americans have been screaming out for help this past year," Meng said.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote on the bill in about two weeks, Schumer said.

Shyster Schumer drumming up more racial resentment by targeting Asian-Americans with self serving compassion.

Way to go, Democrats.

So there hasn't been a 150% rise in hate crimes/assaults against Asian Americans since the former occupant of the White House called Co-Vid the Kung Flu or the China Flu?

Amazing...Blame the people trying to do something about it instead of the actual perpetrators...

I swear, America is getting dumber by the day.

Look where the hate crimes are occurring and who is doing them.

In New York City, where anti-Asian hate crime soared nearly nine-fold in 2020 over the year before, only two of the 20 people arrested last year in connection with these attacks were white, according to New York Police Department  data analyzed by the Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism. Eleven were African Americans, six were white Hispanics and one was a Black Hispanic.   "I thought it was jarring," said Brian Levin, executive director of the center, noting that the finding runs counter to assumptions made by many that perpetrators of anti-Asian hate are mostly angry white men who blame China for the COVID-19 pandemic.

Democrats love to play ethnic and racial divisions. They need to look in own back yard first on this one.

Attacking Asian-Americans because of their Asian ethnicity is already a hate crime.  Democrats are not creating new legislation to address hate crimes; that's already the law.

Schumer is making a big show over doing nothing.  Joe Biden already has the hate crime law now Biden only needs to ensure the law is enforced.  The Justice Dept. doesn't need anything more from the Senate to enforce hate crime laws.

Is Chuck Schumer worried that Joe Biden won't do his job?

Even if it is just a show, what is wrong with that?

Seems to me you all never minded shows for the last four years...

It signals to the Asian community that it will not be tolerated.

A show doesn't need legislation.  Joe Biden could accomplish more with an executive order than Congress can achieve with this piece of legislation because the law is already in place.

It signals to the Asian community that it will not be tolerated.

By highlighting the connection between Asian-Americans and the COVID-19 pandemic?  The title "COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act" specifically targets a perceived Asian-American connection with the pandemic.

Most Asian-Americans aren't of Chinese ethnicity.  Just because someone looks Asian doesn't mean they have ties to China.  That important message about diversity within the Asian-American population has been lost in Democrats' efforts to highlight (and exacerbate) racial divisions.

Bullshit. So now it is how it was done?

Of course it highlights it, it is what is happening....

You actually think some idiot that would attack someone would actually know what country their ancestry was from?

Again bullshit. Like I said, this is designed as a show of force that the Asian community will not be ignored.

You blaming the "Dems' for causing racial problems is laughable.

OK so hate crimes are terrible, awful things that should be investigated and prosecuted. No argument there, but aren’t they already? I’m not hearing the need for new federal legislation.

Meng's "COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act" would require the Department of Justice to speed up hate crime investigation

Ok, well “speed up” is not defined here, and there is nothing specific that suggests the investigations are happening too slowly. According to the FBI’s website , they are already the highest priority for their Civil Rights division.

Hate crimes are the highest priority of the FBI’s civil rights program because of the devastating impact they have on families and communities. The Bureau investigates hundreds of these cases every year, and we work to detect and prevent incidents through law enforcement training, public outreach, and partnerships with community groups.

And if investigations are speeded up, one has to wonder what the cost of that urgency is. Does it mean a less thorough investigation? Does it mean some other crime gets ignored?

provide guidance to local cops on reporting hate crimes

Apparently, the FBI already works with local cops, too.

Many FBI’s field offices participate in working groups with state and local law enforcement partners , as well as community groups within their area of responsibility.

and:

The FBI conducts hundreds of operational seminars, workshops, and training sessions annually for local law enforcement , minority and religious organizations, and community groups to promote cooperation and reduce civil rights abuses. Each year, the FBI also provides hate crimes training for new agents, hundreds of current agents, and thousands of police officers worldwide .

.

work with the Department of Health and Human Services on best practices for keeping racist language out of COVID info from the government.

Seems like the WHO addressed this almost a year ago. This was linked from the CDC website, also (the CDC is a component of the Department of Health and Human Services):

Social Stigma associated with COVID-19: A guide to preventing and addressing social stigma Target audience: Government

I mean I hate to say it’s political posturing, and I certainly don’t disagree with any of the sentiment behind the legislation . . . but it kinda seems like political posturing, when all this stuff is already being done.

This isn't about fixing the problem; this is about acting like they care and adding a few more jobs to the federal government at taxpayer expense.
