You Made Your Bed Now You Must Lie In It
“You've made your bed now lie in it…” first appeared around 1590 as the Middle French proverb “comme on faist son lict, on le treuve” (“As one makes his/her bed, one finds it.”)

I would like people to share an instance / example from the current situation in our country or the world that seems to fit this subject.

I will start --

Many large U.S. cities, who have stablished themselves as "Sanctuary Cities" find themselves in dire straits financially, with rising crime rates, lower quality of life for their residents and declining tourism dollars because of ever growing enclaves of refugees in hotels, tent cities, abandoned buildings and even schools.

These cities and their mayors are blaming everyone but themselves for the state of affairs and want "someone" (other than the city0 to pay for the cost of being a sanctuary city.

This seems like a good example of "You made your bed and now you must lie in it"

I am not asking for agreement or disagreement on my example, but rather for further examples from each of you.

Red Box Rules

This is not a discussion of Democrat vs Republican politics.

This is not a discussion of Bide, or Trump or any other politician

Please present your example that fits the parameters and comment on the examples of others in a constructive, non-aggressive manner

Rudy Giuliani, Hunter Biden, George Santos, Donald Trump, Aaron Rodgers, ..... I would also say Claudine Gay, but I thinks thats a little more complicated than these other examples.

Good examples though I was looking for situational examples - you make some excellent points here.

Thanks

I would agree that the intractable position of many has resulted in political losses for the Republicans and the elimination of many candidates that could have been elected - it also cost them control of the House and Senate.  That is a very good example of the far right creating a situation that bit them on the butt.

Thanks

On the topic of "Affirmative Action" in college admissions-- that has resulted in extreme discrimination against American students of East-Asian descent.

In addition to hurting certain minority groups, it has delayed progress in several areas as we are discriminating against some of the brightest students.

In NYC they sent High School students home so for remote learning so migrants could stay at the school during the storm.

You can see the parent complaints here:

To your point: I have only one question for NYC parents: Who did you vote for?

When a majority of these people are claiming asylum and a majority of them will be denied, it makes no sense to spend billions of the taxpayer dollars and disrupt all of these cities for people that shouldn't be here in the first place.

Hamas in Gaza certainly made their own bed or, maybe or aptly, their own grave.  Iran is trying to fluff its own pillow; time will tell how that lies.  The saying also applies to Ukraine but it's been such a slow motion train wreck that people won't accept that.

Unfortunately, it is not HAMAS but rather the people of Gaza that are being forced to lie in the bed that Hamas made and those people rather than Hamas are paying a dear price.

Just as American citizens have been forced to lie in the bed of illegal immigration made by the Biden administration.  Are the traits shared by Hamas and the Biden administration weak leadership or self-serving politics?  Shifting the burden of guilty consequence onto the innocent masses would seem to provide an answer.

However the leaders of Hamas are actually doing quite well:

Hamas leaders worth staggering $11B revel in luxury — while Gaza’s people suffer.

The terror group’s three top leaders alone are worth a staggering total of $11 billion and enjoy a life of luxury in the sanctuary of the emirate of Qatar.

The emirate has long welcomed the leaders of the terror group and installed them in its luxury hotels and villas.

And where do you think all that wealth came from?  It came from the United Nations and bleeding heart governments that kept sending in more and more "humanitarian aid" to fund the building of the terrorist underground network and the happy wealthy leaders.  "Lord, such fools these mortals be." Most Americans will ridicule my opinion on this - GUNS.  Your Second Amendment should have been qualified or restricted to something specific, should have had reasonable controls, but no, now Americans can worry when they send their kids to school, worry about people who take road rage to an extreme, worry that your 6-year-old will find your gun and kill their 2-year-old sister, worry when they hear a motorcycle backfire, worry when they are taking part in a demonstration, worry if they are in or near a place of worship, worry about gangs, worry about going shopping, and even worry if they are sitting in their living room in front of a window reading a newspaper.  There have been actual happenings of people being shot and killed in ALL of those scenarios, and there are a lot more different scenarios happening.  IMO that is your 'having to lie in a bed that you made' that even has me worried on the other side of the world because I have young grandchildren going to school in America and my son is a prime target especially these days.  What other civilized nation in the world doesn't have laws that don't allow for such universality and freedom to buy, own and use guns?  It's telling that there are more guns than people in America.  Now it's too late to do anything about it, because now EVERYBODY needs a gun to protect themselves and their loved ones, which I'm sure will be used as the justification for their proliferation.

Well stated, no sane person would argue that gun violence is not a problem in our country, but I think that too many people (on both sides of the issue) try to make it a black and white, a yes or no if you will issue.

Position A - there should be absolutely no restrictions on our ability to own and carry weapons because the constitution gives us that right.

Position B - due to the level of gun violence in this country the restrictions on ownership and possession of weapons needs to be as strict as other countries around the world.

In my view - neither of those positions is the answer.

If we could have a discussion of this issue without the typical attacks, name calling and soap box proclamations it wold make for a good go.  Perhaps a topic for the future that we might cohost so to speak.

As I already pointed out, a debate on the subject is useless for more than one reason.  First of all American gun owners are locked in their position - nobody will be convinced of any type of effective method to deal with the existing gun violence, or the argument will be that any controls will be averted by an illegal gun trade anyway.  They probably will just laugh at what Australia or New Zealand did  because nobody is going to give or sell their guns beck to the government.  Secondly, as I said, it's just too damn late to do anything meaningful about it.  You cannot reverse the massiveness that exists.  So you realistically have no choice but to "lie in the bed you made".

I do not think that rational discussion on any subject is useless.  I also do not accept that it is too late to do anything constructive in the way of reform.  I am an advocate of the 2nd Amendment, but I also think that meaningful reform should and must be accomplished including but not limited to red flag laws, limitations on the purchase and ownership of automatic weapons and stricter and harsher penalties for people who use a gun in the commission of a felony.  I think we will achieve reform, but agree that we will never approach the limitations of New Zealand or Australia at least not in the foreseeable future.

I can assure you that I will never ridicule your opinion on this or other issues - we need not always agree on issues, but we do need to always listen and respect the opinions of others

Thanks for sharing

During breakfast, which I just finished eating, I thought about this   You appreciate analogies, and I thought of one, in fact a biblical one.  Recently the head of the NRA was in the news for resigning his post.  Think of the head of the NRA as being Pharaoh, and those who demand much better controls, such as those who have lost their kids in the many school shootings over the years being like the enslaved Jews, and imagine all of those who demand better controls as painting the lentils of their homes with lamb's blood, so that the Angel of Death would pass over (Passover) their homes but take the lives of the first-born of all who reject effective controls.  Even that was not sufficiently effective until Pharaoh's army was drowned in the Red Sea meaning that something much more radical would still be needed.  I would think that anyone who has lost a child in a gun death would be very supportive of effective controls, and MAYBE the adamant gun freedom advocates, especially the head of the NRA, MIGHT change their tune if they experienced the pain of losing a child because of a gun.

Okay, that's a reasonable opinion, Robert.  I really don't expect Klaatu to return to Earth with Gort whose disintegrator ray would demolish all the guns on Earth.

Position B - due to the level of gun violence in this country the restrictions on ownership and possession of weapons needs to be as strict as other countries around the world.

Many people may have forgotten this (?):

The   Public Safety and Recreational Firearms Use Protection Act , popularly known as the   Federal Assault Weapons Ban   (AWB or FAWB), was a subsection of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act of 1994, a United States federal law which included a prohibition on the manufacture for civilian use of certain semi-automatic firearms that were defined as assault weapons as well as certain ammunition magazines that were defined as large capacity.

The 10-year ban was passed by the U.S. Congress on August 25, 1994 and was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on September 13, 1994. [1]  The ban applied only to weapons manufactured after the date of the ban's enactment. It expired on September 13, 2004,

So: it was in effect from 1994 until 2004.

Happiness is a warm gun, mama
