Foodporn: T's favorite shrimp cocktail

Cocktail sauce was popularized in the U.S. in the 1920.  While cold sauces were popular, the unusual ingredient of horseradish (Which was brought to the U.S. via southern Europe and western Asia) made a sauce that some thought was born out of a dare.  Nostril cleaning, citrusy chili sauce with the sweetness of tomatoes?  It just sounds like a dare that happened to be delicious.

I place a pound of shrimp into a pot of boiling water seasoned with some pickling spices.  I cook for one minute then turn off the heat and allow them to poach until done, or about another 2 1/2 minutes.  I strain them and cool them by tossing with ice and place in the refrigerator.  However, it's the sauce that's the boss of this appetizer.

Cocktail Sauce

  • 1 cup Heinz chili sauce
  • 2 Tbsp Ketchup
  • 2 Tbsp prepared horseradish
  • 1 tsp. prepared wasabi
  • Juice of one fresh squeezed lemon

Method

Mix it together, duh.  Yep, it's an easy one and double dipping is allowed.

I never thought of making this myself because I thought it would be too difficult. This looks simple enough and I think I will try it!  Do you use already P and D shrimp?

I do.  I like to get extra jumbo (U-15) as well.  The small ones dry out to quick, IMHO.

Giggles, weren't you the one who often quoted the old "give a man a fish and he will eat for a day; teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day" ? Thems words to live by.

Dear Friend T. Fargo: You are a most welcome addition to the News Talkers.

Have you any recipes and pictures for Passover Matzo Brei?

What Mrs. E. made for us during the week long Freedom Festival is a party on the palette.

For reasons of national security, I am not allowed to disclose the family secret ingredients.

Peace and Abundant Blessings Always.

Enoch.

Brother Enoch, Unfortunately no.   I could make this a future endeavor, with lox and pickled onion on the side.  Do you take your Matzo Brei savory or sweet?

I have a terrific source for Purim recipes & cheesecakes however!

Shalom.

Dear Friend CobaltBlue: Esther, A Jewish Woman married into the royal family to the King of Shushan (Modern day Iran).

Correct.

For the story, use a search engine for the Festival of Purim.

Enoch.

P.S. My saintly paternal grandmother was name Esther.

From Forrest Gump, the movie

Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. There's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it."

Hell no, he forgot Shrimp Enchiladas with Poblano sauce or Mole'

Buzz, do you have access to the recipe for Chinese (or Thai) hot mustard?  A cook who knows food from Sichuan Province or Thailand is really the best person to make it.  Not really suitable for shrimp by themselves, but it does wonders for an egg roll.  It's also pretty good for clearing out the sinuses.  My wife and daughter don't like it because they say it's too hot.  I'm not surprised since it makes even the hottest Mexican stuff that they're used to seem more suitable for small children.  The lady who runs our local Chinese/That restaurant told me that she really should wear a gas mask when she makes it.

I guess the chili sauce bulks the ketchup while also replacing the Worcestershire?

Enough with the gratuitous foul language in titling these articles!  Good thing NT has such a diligent profanity filter.
