RICHMOND, Va. (WFXR) — On Friday, Gov. Glenn Youngkin announced he plans to sign Senate Bill 777 which bans the dangerous “Carolina Squat” modification on vehicles.

Youngkin is scheduled to sign the bill banning the vehicle modification on Monday at 8 a.m.

The bill was introduced on an emergency basis after senators passed out flyers about the tragic death of Jody “BJ” Upton Jr. last month and how the potential dangers of the “Carolina Squat.”

The trend is when vehicles are significantly lifted in the front so the front axle is lifted much higher than the rear axle.

BJ’s family is now without a father, son, and brother.

“He said he was in a wreck and he was just distraught,” BJ’s future sister-in-law, Ann Taylor Kallam, recalled after her fiancé and BJ’s brother, Johnathan Upton, got the call BJ had been in a deadly crash.

According to police, 19-year-old Anthony Newcomb, of Chase City, was the driver of a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado that struck Upton’s 2005 Silverado after crossing the center line of Skipwith Road in Mecklenburg County. Newcomb was transported to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries. He was not wearing a seatbelt.

Newcomb’s car had a modification known as a “Carolina Squat,” officials said.

Youngkin’s signing of the bill will take place at the Lynchburg Sheriff’s Office located on Clay Street.

My Nephew use to ride around with his seat reclined and laying back.

I yelled at him a couple of times and told him he looked like an idiot.

Some of these guys with their trucks. My dad used to make fun of the youngsters with their souped up, shiny, Saturday nite specials. He asked one boyfriend of mine what did he haul in the back of that truck...pigs? wood? coal? cows? rocks?

The boyfriend had the grace to look sheepish

The only truck I ever had was a small Chevy. Was more of a little show truck than anything.

I did use to pack it up with camping gear.

Looking as though either your rear suspension lift gave out from over-weight, your air bags gave of the ghost on the way home or as if you couldn't afford a complete lift kit at first and now you're on the way to get it completed was thought to be cool?  A good look?  Seriously?!?!?!

Did it really need to get this far to sign a bill?  I'd make every jackass with that "look" pay the amount all the tax payers got hit with for the effort of getting the bill written and signed.

The trend is when vehicles are significantly lifted in the front so the front axle is lifted much higher than the rear axle.

The axle isn’t what’s lifted. The front end of the frame is higher than the rear. A certain amount of this is actually useful in off-road driving, what with there being more weight over the front wheels than the rear. It allows for greater suspension travel. However, in street applications, it is usually exaggerated and silly.

Still, it is pretty popular, for whatever reason, and somehow many thousands of truck owners manage to configure their vehicles that way without killing anyone. So, one person has an accident and everyone else has to change. Typical government response.

I think trucks look stupid that way, but not sure it needs to be illegal.
