Trump promised he would testify in his own defense, but his lawyers have "decided against it" | Salon.com
The former president had been adamant that he was willing to testify, but most experts thought that was a bad idea

After over a month in court over his criminal hush money case, former president Donald Trump has decided not to testify in his own defense.

Before the trial started, Trump had ardently maintained that he would testify, telling reporters at Mar-a-Lago: "I'm testifying. I tell the truth." One of his lawyers, Alina Habba, told Fox News just yesterday that Trump "is willing, he is able, he has nothing to hide it all. He's absolutely ready to tell the truth."

But that willingness couldn't be found on Tuesday.

Although Trump's lead counsel, Todd Blanche, had indicated earlier in the trial that the former president could take the stand, "ultimately they decided against it," The New York Times reported.

The consensus among legal experts had been that it might be best if did not. After all, "the jury may simply not like him," as Sarah Krissoff, a former federal prosecutor, put it.

Trump's defense team ended up only calling two witnesses, one of whom, Robert Costello, put on a performance that most legal experts said was a set back to the defense.

Next week will likley bring the case to an end, with closing arguments scheduled after Memorial Day. A dozen jurors will then decide whether Trump is guilty of any or all of the 34 felony counts against him.

The witnesses were longtime Trump insiders. The physical evidence was from Trump Org's own inside checks, invoices and bookkeeping!

I wish he would testify. The jury who don't know him or listen to him would see what an ass he really is

“The jury who don't know him or listen to him would see what an ass he really is.”

Everyone with a pulse knows him, everyone with any concept of personal responsibility admonishes his behavior.

And if convicted, the apologists will contend the jury was tainted, as If he hasn’t tainted every single thing he touches. Perhaps then, he and his acolytes should expect and accept the consequences. Karma truly is a bitch.

Ok, let me change my statement. I want him to testify so that more charges can be added such as perjury and obstruction of justice

Oh! And toss in contempt for added flavor

He would perjure himself in the first 2 minutes of testimony.

You really think he'd take that long?

I don't know why the media plays this game of calling everybody a liar for their lies, but Donald. The man who is determined to stuff himself down the throats of ever man, woman, boy and girl in this country knowingly lied about taking the witness stand in his own defense. Donald is the 'boy' who cries, 'Wolf!" I wish he would take the stand so that he could be consumed by confrontation with his own lies and schemes for which he can't deny without legal penalty.

Trump kept pretending like he wanted to testify, but there was no way he was ever going to testify and it has nothing to do with his lawyers.

Definitely not when he ordered them to call his last witness (widely reported that his lawyers did NOT want Robert Costello on the stand).

why wouldn't he double down on his way to a conviction, it's his legion of suckers footing all the legal bills. his VP contenders know that they'll be entering the oval office thru the back door, it's just a question on how/when trump hits the exit ramp should american voters actually prove to the rest of the world just how gullible they are...
