WASHINGTON, May 23 (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said on Thursday he will use his relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin to get Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich freed from a Russian prison.

The assertion was ridiculed by the campaign of Democratic President Joe Biden, which cited Trump's frequent criticism of the news media as an "enemy of the people."

Trump wrote on his Truth Social media platform that the journalist would be freed soon after the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election where he faces a rematch against Biden.

"Evan Gershkovich, the Reporter from The Wall Street Journal, who is being held by Russia, will be released almost immediately after the Election, but definitely before I assume Office. He will be HOME, SAFE, AND WITH HIS FAMILY," Trump said.

"Vladimir Putin, President of Russia, will do that for me, but not for anyone else, and WE WILL BE PAYING NOTHING!"

Gershkovich was arrested in Russia in March last year on spying charges that he, his paper and the Biden administration have all strongly denied. He has spent more than a year in a Moscow prison, with no date set for a trial.

U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy visited Gershkovich in detention and said he was "maintaining a positive mood while waiting for the trial to begin of a

Trump proving for the umpteenth time how cynical and evil he is.

If you have the power to free him, why don't you do it RIGHT NOW you stupid, lying MF?

And his followers are stupid enough to believe him.

Because the current administration is having such great success getting people out of Russia.

Guess they ran out of international arms dealers and mass murderers to trade.

Your comment is totally irrelevant and completely misses the point.

So who did Biden get freed beside a female basketball player.

It seems your only point is to simply cast aspersions against Trump .

This article, in case you missed it, is further exposing the cynical and fraudulent nature of Trump's ongoing disinformation campaign.   Are you defending him?

Exactly what went through my mind when I first saw the title to this aricle.

"And his followers are stupid enough to believe him."

And I didn't have to read that to have already have known it.

That's a good thing.

Which will anger Democrats more?

(1) News that  John Kerry intervened with the FBI to keep Iranian terrorists from being arrested.

(2)  Putin freeing a wrongfully imprisoned American who the Biden Administration seems to have forgotten about.

Looks like 2 in a runaway.

That's a good thing.

Only to people naive enough to believe Trump.  In reality, it's a big nothing.  Except a cynical lie, of course.

wrongfully imprisoned American who the Biden Administration seems to have forgotten about

As anyone informed knows, that is propaganda. The Biden Administration has been working to free Gershkovich.

Believe what?  He can't do worse than Biden has. I don't think Biden is even aware Hamas is holding Americans hostage. He never mentions them or presses Hamas for their release.    If Putin frees a hostage to curry favor with Trump, that's good. That's the point of having power.

Here's a rule of thumb. It's better for our enemies to release American  hostages than take and hold them.

Wow.  Read the article.

How completely uniformed, or do we just recognize that as more propaganda?

our enemies

Trump and his cultists don't consider Russia to be one of our enemies.

ince #1 is a lie and you know it!

The records provided to our offices show that the Obama/Biden administration’s State Department, under the leadership of John Kerry, actively and persistently interfered with FBI operations pertaining to lawful arrests of known terrorists, members of Iranian proliferation networks, and other criminals providing material support for Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile programs

The senators uncovered at least eight instances between 2015 and 2016  in which the State Department forced the FBI to stand down on arresting individuals linked to the Iranian regime.
