Former GOP Lawyer Warns Of J.D. Vance's 'Unsettling Darkness' After His Donut Shop Visit And We Should Be Worried
By: Terry Lawson (Political Tribune)
In a surprising turn of events, former GOP lawyer Sophia Nelson has called J.D. Vance's recent visit to a donut shop an example of "awkward darkness." Vance, who is Donald Trump's choice for vice president, seems to keep finding himself in embarrassing situations. Nelson's comment highlights just how uncomfortable his public moments have been. Some might even say that calling it "awkward darkness" is putting it lightly. Vance's missteps could be one of the biggest understatements of the year.

Leon Skum commented saying, "I have truly never heard anyone order a 'whatever works' donut. Is that like a Buddhist hotdog?"

Nelson, a legal expert who often advises Republicans, recently spoke on CNN about Vance's visit to a donut shop. He noticed something odd about Vance's behavior. Vance seemed tense and awkward, like he wasn't sure if he was in a donut shop or a courtroom. Where was the charm? Did he leave it in the car? Instead of connecting warmly, he seemed distant, which made Nelson wonder if donuts just aren't his thing.
Nelson compared Vance's awkwardness to Vice President Kamala Harris, who always seems to bring the sunshine wherever she goes. In a clip of Harris, people greeted her with smiles and warmth. Nelson joked that Vance's visit could've used a bit more warmth and a lot less awkwardness—maybe he should've brought more donuts to sweeten the mood!
According to Nelson,
"The energy was entirely different. To my point, J.D. Vance has this kind of awkward darkness about him," she added. "This kind of like roughness. It's not a warm energy, it's like when you saw the dog at the firehouse, when Vice President Harris walked in into dog's just laying down and rolling around all over her. Animals have good instincts and people have good instincts."
One Twitter user posted a clip of Governor Tim Walz walking into a fast-food shop with beaming faces all around, showing a stark contrast to JD Vance's donut shop fiasco.
Look at the beaming faces here as Gov Tim Walz walks into this fast-food shop. Couldn't be more of a stark contrast to JD Vance's donut shop fiasco. Spot the difference? One is human, the other is just pretending to be one. pic.twitter.com/cemY3CSUin

But it's not just Vance's behavior at the donut shop that's catching attention. His whole political style seems to be modeled after Trump's more uncomfortable moments. This "awkward darkness" might be the new trend in the GOP, where being charming and relatable isn't as important as strange stunts and awkward public interactions. It's leaving many people confused.
As we watch the GOP choose people who seem to struggle with basic charm—like picking a donut shop for their public events—it's clear they're missing the point. Maybe next time they'll try something different to avoid more awkward moments. In politics, a little charm goes a long way, and it seems to be missing from Trump's choices. So, let's hope Vance's next public appearance has more charm or, at least, a good PR team that can turn those awkward donut shop moments into something more pleasant. After all, if they don't step up their game, they might just end up being a footnote in political history.

I watched the video and noticed how awkward he is with the employees. I didn't see any customers in the donut shop, either.
So much for connecting with the Regular Jane and Joe.
There's another video of him delivering root beer floats to a crowd of people at a drive in but I don't see awkwardness. I just wanted to see him spill that tray of pop and ice cream
just wait till his wife dumps him for his campaign misogyny after his failed bid for VP...
I think that's standard practice for the USSS in a campaign stop, although it may be the campaigns that do it to insure the best optics for the cameras. Harris did the same thing in a stop at a restaurant in Pittsburgh. There's always a lot of theater for the cameras during campaigns.
they probably asked any of the maga racists and misogynists to leave for good reason...
there would be a lot of them in that part of Pittsburgh
I've got a friend from pitt that could hear that accent in a crowd of people talking. I couldn't...
Oh, I can.
Yeah....I am sure[✘]
Yeah, a real man of the people. When he told some one who he was and running for VP, they said 'okay'.
So awkward, no people skills/social skills whatsoever.
Did you see Tim Walz's visit to the runza shop in Nebraska. They all loved him and were happy to see him.
"Creepy" and "weird" aren't just campaign rhetoric.
lol - that's the truth
Captain Bonespur and Major Weirdo Strike Back...
I didnt think his actual ordering of the donuts was that unusual, but his asking every employee he talked to how long they have been working there (and nothing else) definitely seemed weird.
He is not comfortable with real people.
When I saw it I could almost see a thought bubble pop out of his head after every answer to “how long have you worked here?” that said “omg what a loser”.
I'm starting to think his parents were blood relatives in kentucky...
I think his mother was anally inseminated.
I figured his no abortions without exception stance had a personal back story...
'back story'
heh heh heh
the employees had all heard about his couch story and were creeped out about him buying donuts there...
He didn't even shake hands with anyone
That would require touching a poor person.
maga has dominated the creep factor this election...
and about how long the business was there - way to reach out and connect with the people.
J.D. does not like his peeps. Anyhoot, what's up with the initials Mr. John Doe?
He's still searching for the perfect identity
you can take the goober out of gooberville, but you can't take gooberville out of the goober.
"J.D." commonly refers to "Juvenile Delinquent". Perfect in this case.
I read something awhile back about all his name changes during his life...
He is usually known as "Shit for Brains", but since that's also his running mate's name, they are now known as "Big Shit for Brains" and "Little Shit for Brains".
Commonly, perhaps the unwoke still prefers this 19th century term. The woke know that these are children in conflict with the law.
