WATCH: CNN Bends Over Backwards To Cushion The Blow From Devastating Record Low Biden Poll
The latest poll numbers for Joe Biden are his worst yet, and the decline in approval is stark month over month. But CNN worked really hard Thursday to put that in the best possible light. For some reason. The post WATCH: CNN Bends Over Backwards To Cushion The Blow From Devastating Record Low Biden Poll first appeared on Mediaite.

On CNN's Newsroom on Thursday, the network took great pains to cushion the blow of President Joe Biden's latest record low polling numbers.

© Provided by Mediaite CNN Talks About Biden Approval Ratings Hitting New Lows

Above a chyron that said Biden's approval rating "dips" to "all-time low," anchor Ana Cabrera segued to the stunning new Quinnipiac poll numbers from a story about the debt ceiling fight by way of an impressively belabored throat-clearing.

Load Error

"A debt crisis appears to be averted for now," Cabrera began, launching into a laundry list of factors affecting Biden's approval.

"But as we just mentioned the president's economic agenda still hasn't passed, there's ongoing fallout over Afghanistan and the Mexico border crisis and, of course, we're still in the pandemic, and all of that has sent president Biden's approval rating to an all-time low," said Cabrera.

"Just 38% of Americans approve of his job performance, according to this new Quinnipiac University poll. That is down from 42% just three weeks ago," she continued.

Cabrera then questioned the premise of her own segment by saying that other polls show a rosier result.

"Other recent surveys aren't quite so bleak, however, for the White House," said Cabrera. "A CNN average of recent polls puts Biden's approval rating at 45%."

Reaching even further, Cabrera cited Pew Research Center polls to argue that Biden's agenda is still really hot right now, so not to worry.

Watch:

Adding context for poll numbers is a standard practice, but doing so can be selective. In the segment, Cabrera did add the context of other polling, but not that the laundry list of preemptive "buts" to her segment — the various items affecting Biden's approval - are things owned by the president, not simply things that happened to him.

The Afghanistan withdrawal, the border crisis, these are the president's responsibility and a test of his policies. They aren't simply unfortunate circumstances. Lumping them with the debt limit debate that CNN spent the day blaming on Republicans certainly gives the impression that they are neutral negatives or even beyond his control.

Cabrera likewise noted that we are "still in" a pandemic, rather than noting that Quinnipiac specifically polled on Biden's handling of the pandemic, with 50% of respondents giving him a bad grade.

Additionally, the polling average cited by Cabrera as a caveat or counter represents an average of polls. As both FiveThirtyEight and RealClearPolitics averages show, the rate of decline shown in Quinnipiac's result is mirrored in the averages. So while the CNN average may be a higher number, the decline is essentially the same.

Not every poll result is news, and polls are almost never cited in a vacuum. But this poll was big news, and when context crosses into virtual gainsaying or at least caveating, it's no longer a matter of simply adding context. It's trying hard to cushion bad news for a preferred political point of view.

OK, but that still kind of sucks, right? Especially when we’re talking about a guy who was supposed to unite people, restore some kind of good manners or something to Washington, finally solve our big problems, and generally wield his leadership, expertise, wisdom, and experience to make everybody feel better about America.

It takes two to tango. If Republicans had discarded Trump and trumpism on Jan 21 , you would have a good argument. Instead they would rather see the country fail than Biden succeed.

And dont say the same thing happened to Trump. Trump is a piece of human shit who was never for one second fit to hold high office in the United States.

Do you understand my argument is that 45% sucks given the circumstances and expectations? I fail to see how you have refuted that argument.

And dont say the same thing happened to Trump.

I actually didn’t say anything about Trump, but since you bring him up, I was always kind of amazed his approval ratings were as high as they were. Back to Biden now?

If it is a choice between Trump and Biden, then get ready for Trump to win again. It will be another war of the lesser of two evils.

Biden is so bad he is making Trump look good by comparison. Seems as being just anti-Trump is not enough to make someone a good president.

Trump at least had a few victories under his belt; and what was a strong economy. If it wasn't for Covid Biden would have lost in a landslide to begin with. Now Covid is worse than ever; and Biden threw in a few more crisis with Afghanistan, the southern border, and immigration. He still has 3 more years to add to his fuck ups; unfortunately.

As much as I want a strong young Republican to come forward and primary Trump; it doesn't look like it will happen. Can't blame them for not wanting to cross Trump's hard core followers.

Where has Biden succeeded?

Only area I can really see is that he did end our involvement in Afghanistan.  The way it was ended was horrible, just about the worst way to do it and it did seem like there wasn't any real planning for it. But he did end our involvement there so I would say that was a success.

Course now we need to see what the future brings for us from that also.

The decision to pull out of Afghanistan was made under the previous administration so the only thing Biden had a hand in is the abandonment of military weapons and equipment (arming our enemy) and the needless deaths of hundreds and abandoned US Citizens and allies.

I would say that the decision was made to start the process, but Biden is the one who actually did the pullout. The Trump administration set up an agreement based on specific goalposts which as you remember were not met so the pullout did not have to happen.  And once Biden was in office he could have tossed that agreement aside so many other agreements made by the Trump administration, so it's not like Biden was locked in to following that agreement.

So IMO Biden made the decision that we were getting out of Afghanistan. And I do agree with that decision, in fact I don't believe we ever should have been in there nation building in the first place. It was just a big hole to throw a lot of money at so that the usual suspects got richer.  But the manner of the departure, that was 100% on Biden and that IMO was a huge cluster fuck.

Biden did toss the agreement and made the fatal decision to conduct a full retreat abandoning millions in military hardware and US Citizens and allies.

So IMO Biden made the decision that we were getting out of Afghanistan.

Ok.  Lets run with that.  It shows the lack of comprehension the blithering idiot had about a combat zone that he should have been VERY familiar with as it was still going on when he was the "VP".

in fact I don't believe we ever should have been in there nation building in the first place

We weren't there to "rebuild" a damn thing.  Our mission was to prevent a terrorist attack on US Soil.

What this proves is that those on the left are a minority in this country. I seriously doubt any conservatives or republicans are part of this approval number.

Hell, I'm willing to bet this 45 percent is highly padded since CNN is reporting it.
