Midterm Watch - Part 1: The Governors
“New Yorkers throughout the state are sick and tired of the attacks on our wallets, safety, freedom, and kids’ education. They’re fed up with the direction of Kathy Hochul’s New York and her rampant pay-to-play corruption. Crime Wave Kathy is driving New York right off a cliff. To repeal cashless bail, fire rogue DAs like Alvin Bragg, stop congestion pricing and take other bold action to save our state, Hochul’s gotta go,” he said in a statement.

We are now one month away from the midterm elections. The Republicans are expected to win the House and the Senate is still up for grabs, but another important story is how much, if at all, the radical policies of Joe Biden will effect the nation's governor's races. There are 36 Gubernatorial seats on the ballot this year. Some of these races like the race in California, aren't really contests. In the case of California, it isn't because Gov Newsom is so popular, it's because the state is so incredibly corrupt. However there are some very important races that are contentious and in some cases a true bellwether. Four races stand out.

Let us start with the suffering state of New York:

Incumbent Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, who served as lieutenant governor under Andrew Cuomo until his resignation, is running for Governor. We all remember when she took the helm, as Cuomo left under pressure and in disgrace. We knew little about her. Now that she has presided over New York's crime crisis, we know her well. She has done nothing about crime and has a legagy of awarding state contracts to her donors. New Yorkers might just be fed up enough to make a serious change.

Her opponent is Lee Michael Zeldin who has represented New York's 1st congressional district in the United States House of Representatives since 2015. Most importantly, he is a Republican running for Governor in a deep blue state. Shockingly, Zeldin is within 2 points of Hochul (  44.5% to 42.6%) according to a reliable Trafalgar poll taken on Thursday:

Arizona's open seat:

Republican Gov. Doug Ducey is term-limited. Arizona, once a red state has turned somewhat blue due to rampant illegal migration. This race has become one of the most closely watched gubernatorial races of 2022, featuring former TV anchor & Republican Kari Lake vs democrat Katie Hobbs. The problem for the GOP in this one is that Lake is what the media calls an election denier. It will be an uphill battle for Lake to overcome the 24/7 characterization.

Nevada and the re-election campaign of Gov. Steve Sisolak:

Sisolak like fellow democratic incumbent, U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto, is in the fight of his political life. In this one the GOP has put forward a strong candidate in Joe Lombardo (not to be confused with the Outfit's street boss by the same name.) Sisolak has tried to make "abortion" the issue, while Lombardo has made Sisolak's performance as Governor the issue.

Oregon's open seat:

Here is another one where the Governor can not run because of term limits. That would have been radical democrat Kate Brown. This one is a 3 way race and each one of the candidates has a shot. Former House Speaker Tina Kotek, a democrat is running in big blue Oregon in hopes of becoming the first openly lesbian governor in the U.S. Credentials that could only be admired out on the west coast. The GOP has former state House Minority Leader Christine Drazan, who is well respected in crazyland. And as the fly in the ointment: former state Sen. Betsy Johnson, ademocrat turned independent. The presence of the independent makes it a bit unlikely, but it is possible that a Republican could take this seat. In that ever happened, Oregon would be another bellwether in the coming red wave.
