The White House criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) Wednesday for leading a group of Republican lawmakers to the southern border as Senate negotiators continue working toward an immigration policy deal.

The Biden administration ended 2023 overseeing a record influx of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, with officials recording more than 300,000 encounters in December alone.

BIDEN LOSES GROUND WITH YOUNG VOTERS AND MINORITY VOTING GROUPS: POLL

President Joe Biden's polling on the border, coupled with his desire to secure more funding for Ukraine's war against Russia, brought him to the immigration negotiating table in December despite heavy pressure from Democrats and immigration activists not to adopt restrictive policies.

Johnson has been leading the charge in the House for Biden to adopt a stricter immigration stance, including his executive authority apart from an immigration deal in Congress. In a statement ahead of his trip on Wednesday, Johnson claimed that "Biden and Senate Democrats are asleep at the wheel" on the issue.

White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates in turn castigated Johnson Wednesday morning for claiming to care about the border while opposing the president's request for tens of billions in Ukraine funding, which Republicans are demanding include a set of changes to domestic immigration law. He also accused Republicans of wanting to cut border enforcement in their quest to reduce federal spending.

"After voting in 2023 to eliminate over 2,000 Border Patrol agents and erode our capacity to seize fentanyl, House Republicans left Washington in mid-December even as President Biden and Republicans and Democrats in the Senate remained to forge ahead on a bipartisan agreement," Bates wrote. "In fact, right now, instead of joining the Biden Administration and members of both parties in the Senate to find common ground, Speaker Johnson is continuing to block President Biden's proposed funding to hire thousands of new Border Patrol agents, hire more asylum officers and immigration judges, provide local communities hosting migrants additional grant funding, and invest in cutting edge technology that is critical to stopping deadly fentanyl from entering our country."

Actions speak louder than words. House Republicans' anti-border security record is defined by attempting to cut Customs and Border Protection personnel, opposing President Biden's record-breaking border security funding, and refusing to take up the President's supplemental funding request," he closed.

Though immigration remains a liability for the president ahead of the 2024 election, Senate Republicans have indicated to the Washington Examiner they will pursue their desired policy reforms, including higher standards to claim asylum and expedited removals from the country, even if it helps Biden secure centrist votes in November.

Must be they have something to hide or this would just be another ho hum. Can't have anything other than bias media telling us what we are supposed to think.

The White House criticized House Speaker Mike Johnson

Because Speaker Johnson knows where the border is?

Senate negotiators continue working toward an immigration policy deal.

There needs to be security at the border BEFORE you can implement any kind of policy.

Brandon can ram his demands where the sun won't shine and rain won't go.

The only reason he wants more BP, Asylum Officers, and leftist immigration judges is to process as many people as possible into the country. Enforcing our immigration laws is the last thing on his mind.

He cares more about Ukraine's borders (As long as it pertains to billions they will receive in financial and military aid. Ukraine winning the war, not so much. Kick backs to his family and friends must improve with them at war; and all of the helpfulness being POTUS can provide.) than about our own.

Funding runs out on the temporary funding measure on Feb 2nd.  Shut down the government on until the border is shut down. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Funding "run out" the last time but somehow they found BILLIONS to send to Ukraine.  As long as ANY funding is leaving the country, they have no justifications for a shutdown over money.

Biden has done more damage to border security than just about any other president in history! He, Harris, Mayorkas and their minions do not have the guts to come down to the border where the real problems are and speak to the rank and file field agents trying to do their jobs with one hand tied behind their backs by the Biden administration non policies. The few times they have come near the border, hey are led by the nose by senior CBP beaurocrats concerned more about their careers than the border security and those below then and are shown only what they want them to see. They gag the rank and file agents to tell Biden and his minions only what they want to hear rather than the truth.

Here is Eagle Pass just weeks ago vs. yesterday. The Biden Administration decided to divert the flood of illegal immigrants to another location in order to keep them out of the camera shots during @HouseGOP ’s visit to Eagle Pass. Don’t be fooled, they are still being released into our country. Under President Biden, our Southern border is a disaster.

Biden gaslighting the public won't change the fact that the House passed an immigration bill in May, 2023.  Chuck Schumer has refused to do anything with the House bill.  And Biden threatened a veto after the House passed the bill.

Biden refusing to negotiate is not the fault of Republicans.  Just remember that Biden's refusal to negotiate is how the US was dragged into the Ukrainian quagmire.  Biden is handling the war in Ukraine as well as he is handling illegal immigration.  Way to go, Taliban Joe!

Can't be any worse than how Biden has screwed it all up.
