Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) and Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) unveiled a resolution Tuesday that declares former President Trump "did not engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States."

The resolution — which spans one page and has more than 60 GOP co-sponsors — comes as groups across the country try to disqualify Trump from appearing on their 2024 presidential election ballots on claims that he engaged in an insurrection during the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol.

The efforts point to language in the 14th Amendment that bars from office those that have engaged in an insurrection.

In December, the Colorado Supreme Court knocked Trump off the state's Republican Party ballot, a decision that will come before the Supreme Court on Thursday. Gaetz referenced it Tuesday during a press conference surrounded by more than 10 co-sponsors.

"We are here today to authoritatively express that President Trump did not commit an insurrection, and we believe Congress has a unique role in making that declaration," Gaetz said. "It's not the job of the states and especially not the job of some bureaucrats in Colorado to make this assessment and interfere with the right of voters to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice."

"As President Donald Trump continues to dominate in the polls, extreme Democrats will stop at nothing in attempt to prevent President Donald Trump from returning to the White House," Stefanik said.

The resolution, which is nonbinding, would declare that it is "the sense of the House of Representatives" that Trump "did not engage in insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or give aid or comfort to the enemies thereof."

In addition to Colorado, Trump has been disqualified from the ballot in Maine. That decision, however, has been suspended pending the high court's decision.

Trump's candidacy has been challenged in at least 35 states, according to The New York Times.

Gaetz said he thinks approving the resolution would be "incredibly helpful legally."

"If we're the purported victim, in Congress, and we're saying this was not an insurrection, I think that will hold a great deal of weight," he added.

Gaetz said he has not received any assurances from Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) or GOP leadership that they will bring the resolution to the floor for a vote, but he alluded to the Louisiana Republican's closeness to Trump.

"I sat next to him for seven years on the Judiciary Committee, though, so I'm pretty sure as to where he stands," Gaetz said.

Desperation is Democrats tools at the state level trying to bar Trump from the ballot.

Desperation is the myriad of lawsuits that are nothing more than Democrats throwing shit at the wall and seeing what will stick against Trump; and trying to force all of the trials to start and conclude before the general elections. So much for letting the legal process play out. Democrats have another election to rig- this time the general instead of just their own primary.)

Desperation is Brandon and Democrats trying to blame Republicans for their border mess.

Desperation is the "Bipartisan" immigration Senate bill negotiated by Establishment Republicans and Democrats that does nothing to secure the border; stem the flow of illegals; or put in place vetting of illegal immigrants who are detained. But it does give Brandon the Democrats the lion's share of the foreign aid going to Ukraine- with a significantly lesser amount going to Israel- and even more meager amount to the Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza (the Dems pulled a twofer on that one. As if the Palestinians are too stupid to see the US markings on much of the Israeli hardware and munitions; or the paid for by the US taxpayer and delivered to by Israel by those that are not.)

Desperation is Schumer sitting on the Republican House passed immigration bill for months- then claiming Republicans are the problem.

Desperation is trying to watch Brandon put the ME genie back into the bottle when he dropped the sanctions on Iran; and returned billions to them. But the genie has turned into a Djinn; and Russia, China, and Europe have no interest of restarting sanctions. His tepid response to over 200 strikes against US forces has led us here. Keeping US troops in Iraq, Syria, Jordan, and moving 3/4's of our fleet to the ME has put targets on all of their backs. Guess he figures Iranian backed militia and terrorist missile and drone strikes against US troops is better than them hitting Israel.

That is desperation- too bad the US taxpayer is on the hook for the vast majority of it.

Fits rather neatly with the Constitutional notion of State's Rights, kind of like  abortion....

Desperation is the myriad of lawsuits

90% of which haven't been thrown out but allowed to proceed.

Desperation is Brandon

Sorry, childish then, childish now.

Desperation is the "Bipartisan" immigration Senate bill negotiated by Establishment Republicans and Democrats

Gee, God forbid we return to the pre Newt politics of compromise and progress...McDonnell fucked us all by trying to eliminate the last year of any Dem Administration by having the GOP freeze everything in an election year.

Desperation is Schumer sitting on the Republican House passed immigration bill for months-

Cry me a fucking river, Every House Speaker & Leader regardless of Party has done this to one extent or another

back to 1850.

Desperation is trying to watch Brandon put the ME genie back into the bottle

More childish name calling and an ignorance of history to boot.  The ME has been a hot bed of regime chance and war as far back as the earliest Sumerian "writings".  the problem isnt American Presidents or Europe, China or Russia. The problem is the ME, it's history and religions.

That is desperation

Desperation is the daily regurgitation of opinions of people that think they know the answers to 5,000 year old problems in other countries and thinking it's relevant.

Just because these former 'president' defenders of the indefensible say that the former 'president' didn't do it, doesn't make it so.

There's lots and lots of EVIDENCE proving otherwise, video and republicans stating that they begged him to call an end to it and he refused to.  Even Ivanka begged him to put an end to it and he refused to.

"It's not the job of the states and especially not the job of some bureaucrats in Colorado to make this assessment and interfere with the right of voters to cast their vote for the candidate of their choice."

I think I see. So, if a 13 year-old, born in China - a child of Chinese citizens - wants to be President of the United States, “some bureaucrat in Colorado” isn’t allowed to say he can’t be on the ballot. And then the voters of Colorado can vote for this non-citizen child, Colorado electors will vote for him, and that’s just how it will be.

Seriously?

Elise Demonic is the definition of a political creature: She stuck her finger in the political water of her district and went from a fairly moderate stance to full-on Trumper. Disappointing to say the least. This is just the latest in a stream of poor decisions on her part, not from an electability standpoint, but from a caring about the direction that we are heading in as a nation politically.

It ceased being a "protest" when they scaled the walls, broke through police lines, bashed in the exterior windows of the Capitol, and tried to bash down the door to the House chamber.

They werent there to protest , they were there to effect the vote count on behalf of Trump. In other words, an insurrection.
