Great perspective
The article is presenting truth with a twist. In the 1950s the United States was fighting a ground war followed by another ground war in the 1960s. And Federal budget accounting has changed since the 1950s. The numbers cited for the 1950s represent the discretionary budget in today's accounting methods.
The United States is still spending half the discretionary budget on defense. Homeland security, intelligence operations, and other national security related expenditures have been separated from defense spending. So, over half of the discretionary budget is being spent on defense and security related activities. Add in VA costs and the portion of discretionary spending on defense and security rises above 60 pct and approaches the spending of the 1950s.
Pleading military poverty isn't being truthful. No, we are not spending 69 pct of the discretionary budget on defense but the amount discretionary spending is not far below that level. The United States is not fighting the same sort of ground war, either. The nature of warfare has changed since the 1950s and more civilian agencies are involved in securing the United States. Are we supposed to start another ground war so the Defense Dept. can get more money? Check your draft cards.
But the crowds he talks to don't seem to know that.
Ah, to be young!
Polls do show that's where his biggest support is. I hate to stereotype the college kids, but it is what it is.
It would have to be! The impressionable young who have yet to experience the realities of life.
