Bible in lap (black-and-white)The head of a Christian think tank says two well-known schools of divinity are redefining the identity of God and headed towards heresy.
The divinity schools at Duke University and Vanderbilt University have set guidelines, recommending professors use more "inclusive" language when referring to God. Duke, for example, is specifically recommending use of the terms "God" and "Godself" instead of using gender-specific pronouns such as "He" or "Him." Why? Because, they say, the masculine pronouns "have served as a cornerstone of the patriarchy."
Mark Tooley, president of the Institute on Religion & Democracy, says the two schools are following the type of political correctness that has been around for many years in liberal-leaning protestant seminaries. He explains that such guidelines have devastating theological consequences.
Tooley, Mark (IRD)"They are undermining the core identity of God," he tells OneNewsNow, "and specifically [the identity] of the Trinity as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit and how God reveals himself in scripture exclusively in masculine language. So they are redefining the identity of God and heading into the area of heresy, if unintentionally."
According to Tooley, the actions of the two schools mirror what's happening in the culture. "Overall the secular culture is trying to reject the core identity of male and female and to propose that gender is fluid or inconsequential and/or self-determined," he elaborates.
But Tooley says the good news is the most radical forms of feminist theology that were popular in mainline liberal protestant circles in the 1990s have subsided and lost steam – and he believes it doesn't have the same influence and power it once had.
He believes "the core message of the church and the Bible will always prevail."
