FANTASY & SCI-FI MOVIE QUIZ

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A COMMENT, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE QUIZ FOR EVERYONE ELSE.    POST THEM IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.

Don't forget that I am on the other side of the world (of most of you) and I could be asleep when you send your answers, so be patient - I will get to your PN as soon as I can.

It would be wise to read this before trying the quiz....

This time, besides the two image clues, the third clue is that the movie has to be either a fantasy or science fiction movie.  As before, in many cases just identifying the images will tell you the title of the movie, but some images may be of an item or scenario that is a primary object or otherwise indicative of the plot or movie name, and you might have to have seen the movie to identify the movie.  A few of the questons were included in previous quizzes, but even if so I tried not to use the same image clues, and as usual I don't think any of the image clues are actual screen shots from the movies.  I try to use clues that do not make it easy to do a web search, and since this is a test of your movie memory, web searching using web programs that identify movies from clues is cheating.

TAKE NOTE:   Since it is not impossible for you to find the actual movie names I will be fairly strict in my scoring, so even if you guess the answer you should check the movie name on the web to make sure it is the full and correct name.  For example, you will lose a half mark if you do not say "The" if the movie name starts with that word, or if you make the title two words when it is only one, for example not "Brave Heart", but "Braveheart" Also, do NOT forget punctuation marks if they are part of the title.  So just identifying the images does not necessarily mean that you know the name of the movie.  The images should be a CLUE to the ACTUAL name of the movie.   The correct answer is the name of the ORIGINAL movie, and not the name of a remake or sequel if it differs.

There are some hard ones to guess, and also some very easy ones, so give it a try and NAME THESE MOVIES.

Please number your answers the same as the images.

Hope there are as many participants for this quiz as there were for the horror movie quiz, but I guess it will depend on whether you're into Sci-Fi and fantasy - but it should be fun anyways.  Please be sure to read the whole introduction that sets out the rules and can prevent you from making mistakes that would reduce your score, and, as always, remember....

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS HERE, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE QUIZ FOR EVERYONE ELSE.    POST THEM IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.

Depends on how serious the misspelling is.  It can still earn a half mark.

Well I finished & told Buzz some were complete guesses, others were guesses based on titles of movies I have heard of & some were movies I knew...

Thank you Sandy.  I can't believe that anyone couldn't read and understand the warning I posted in two colours on the quiz and on my first comment.

Four participants have already posted their guesses and only one question remains unanswered by someone or other, so this quiz is not too difficult for anyone who has a passing knowledge of fantasy and sci-fi movies.

Eight members have tried the quiz and still that one question has not been answered.  Because I believe it is one that should be easy to answer I do not intend to replace it.  I will be closing the quiz in two days so anyone who was intending to try it should do so soon.

I got 10 out of 20. only answered the ones I was reasonably certain about. Of those ten, nine were for sure and one was kind of iffy...

I'm happy to see that 12 members have participated so far and most had pretty good scores, but nobody reached the top with a perfect 20 score.  It was good to see that someone finally could identify the only question that until now was not answered correctly, so therefor all the questions were answerable.  I will be closing the quiz tomorrow at this time, so any stragglers should get their answers in NOW.

Thanks for the quiz Buzz. Unfortunately, I generally suck at this type of deduction. But I'll give it a try.

There are members who first start my quizzes getting scores of 4 or 5 out of 20, but then start getting scores of 14 or 15 once they get used to how I use the clues.  Practice makes perfect.

I noticed how you use the clues. Rather clever. But I still suck at such things. Very few actually "jump out" at me. I actually have to put a significant amount of mental energy into deciphering the clues. Even then, with limited success.

You mentioned a possible quiz about warfare. Try WW II, especially aviation. Just a suggestion.

For the next quiz I considered a lot of possibilities, such as Westerns, Noir, Comedies, Musicals, Movies released during specific years, but my probability will be War movies (not limited to WW2 but including aviation of course), or else Biographies (i.e. stories about real people).

Out of that entire list... I wouldn't stand a chance with a single possible exception... comedy.

The problem I saw with musicals and comedies is that the lists of them on the web contain many I would never have thought were musicals and comedies.

It's almost 11 p.m  here and I'm going to sleep.  When I wake I'll close the quiz and announce the winners.  13 have played, which I think is the most ever, so I'm energized to continue creating the quizzes.

The time has come, the Walrus said to close the quiz, post the answers and announce the winners.  VERY happy to see so many participants - 13, the most ever for one of my quizzes.  Often the champion, Snuffy leads with 18 out of 20, Perrie follows close behind with 17,  MsAubrey comes in third with 16 and Kathleen earns Honourable Mention with 15 1/2.  Others were close behind, and new participants joined in.

It was interesting to see that only the two who tried the quiz for the first time were the only ones who could identify number 16.  Perhaps some knowledge of astronomy was required. but the clues were THE Galaxy in ANDROMEDA and a person STRAINing something.

Here are the answers, for those who have not yet had the fun of playing....

1.   Field of Dreams  -  corn field & person dreaming
2.   When Worlds Collide  -  planets & car head on collision
3.   Beetlejuice  -  Beetle & orange juice
4.   Time Bandits  -  TIME magazine & Calvera and his bandit gang from The Magnificent Seven
5.   Forbidden Planet  -  banned sign & a planet
6.   Cinderella  -  a glass slipper (an immediate giveaway) and a palace.
7.   The Time Machine  -  a clock & a machine
8.   The Fifth Element  -  Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto (The Emperor Concerto) & the 4 elements
9.   Big Fish  -  daffodils & a big fish
10.  Waterworld  -  water pouring from a tap & the planet Neptune (named for the god of the sea)
11.  The Brave Little Toaster  -  an Indian Brave & a toaster
12.  Spaceballs  -  balls (worlds?) in space & a hair dryer
13.  Hook  -  a hook & a pirate flag  - I later learned it was a sort of takeoff from Peter Pan, so that was also acceptable.
14.  Bicentennial Man  -  a bicentennial image & a robot
15.  City of Angels  -  a city image & angels
16.  The Andromeda Strain  -  Galaxy in Andromeda & a strainer
17.  The Seventh Seal  -  7th & a seal
18.  Vanilla Sky  -  vanilla ice cream & and a sky image
19.  Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs  -  “Mirror, mirror on the wall….” & girl biting an apple.  I later learned that Mirror, Mirror also fit, so I accepted it.
20.  Yellow Submarine  -  yellow paint & a submarine

Thanks to all who played.  I have not yet decided whether to do war movies or biographies next, but it will be soon.

I've decided that the next quiz will be war movies.  I've already picked the movies and have the clues loaded in my picture library ready to post, and will be posting the quiz forthwith.  Save for two questions they are all World War 2 movies.  I am concerned, though, that war movies won't be all our usual participants' cup of tea.
