First Look Inside 37m Classic Yacht Atlantide Following Two-Year Rebuild at Huisfit

The 37.3-meter classic motorsailer   Atlantide   has made a spectacular return to the water after an extensive two-year rebuild at Huisfit, the refit division of Royal Huisman. Originally constructed in 1930 by Philip & Sons and designed by the renowned Alfred Mylne,   Atlantide   boasts a storied history spanning over nine decades.

Her recent transformation was driven by her owners, Jim Clark and his wife Kristy, who acquired the yacht in 2020. The Clarks, long-time patrons of Royal Huisman, entrusted the yard with this ambitious project after previously commissioning three yachts from them, including the iconic  Athena  and  Hanuman .

A “New Build” Approach to Restoration

Initially brought to the Vollenhove yard for a cosmetic refresh in January 2021, the refit quickly evolved into a significant structural overhaul. Engineers discovered that  Atlantide’s  frame had suffered from dents and deformation, requiring an extensive rebuild.

Royal Huisman’s CEO Jan Timmerman described the scale of the project as comparable to constructing a new yacht:

“If a discerning client commissions a fourth, very substantial project to the same shipyard, you just know that the work you perform is truly appreciated. So we are most honored to find ourselves in the position to realize yet another dream for our esteemed clients Jim and Kristy Clark.”

Preserving Classic Elegance

The Clarks were adamant about maintaining  Atlantide’s  post-war aesthetic while upgrading her for modern usability. Highlights of the rebuild include:

  • Teak Deckhouse Restoration : The original deckhouse was carefully lifted in one piece for preservation, strengthening, and refinishing.
  • Historical Details Retained : Original teak elements, including cap rails and winches (some dating back 60-70 years), were meticulously restored and reintegrated.

The yacht’s Art Deco interiors, installed by a previous owner, were simplified to create a more casual and functional space. The main saloon now serves as a relaxation area, while the former indoor dining area has been converted into a media room with plush seating. Outdoor dining takes center stage on the aft deck, complete with a custom table and a weather-protected Bimini awning.

Upgrades and New Additions

The rebuild also saw  Atlantide  equipped with a new rig and sails, crafted to the original specifications. “It’s a work of art,” said Jim Clark. He emphasized the yacht’s authentic, classic character:

“I like the historic quality of this boat; nothing is plastic. I’m a classic boat snob. I like the old wood look; big modern boats do nothing for me.”

A New Chapter for  Atlantide

Now restored to her former glory,  Atlantide  is set to serve as a day boat during summers in Martha’s Vineyard and as a tender to  Hanuman  during regattas like the prestigious Bucket Races. Her revival cements Royal Huisman’s reputation for delivering award-winning refits, adding  Atlantide  to a distinguished portfolio that includes vessels like  Broadwater  and  Athos .

This project reaffirms Huisfit’s standing as a premier destination for classic yacht restorations, blending heritage craftsmanship with modern ingenuity.
