Mexico's foreign minister rejects Trump deportation policy

Mexico has condemned new guidelines issued by the United States, under which almost all illegal immigrants can be subject to deportation.

The new rules include sending undocumented people to Mexico, even if they are not Mexicans.

But Mexican Foreign Minister Luis Videgaray says his country cannot "accept unilateral decisions imposed by one government on another."

Two top US officials are in Mexico to discuss the measures.

Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, and the head of Homeland Security, John Kelly, will hold talks with President Enrique Pena Nieto, amid one of the most serious rifts between the two neighbours in recent years.

What is changing?

The changes announced on Tuesday include plans to enforce an existing provision of the US Immigration and Nationality Act that allows authorities to send illegal immigrants back to Mexico, regardless of where they are from.

But it is unclear whether the US has authority to force Mexico to accept foreigners.

The Obama government focussed on deporting immigrants convicted of serious crimes.

Now, the new priorities are broad enough to apply to almost any illegal immigrant, including anyone who has been charged with a crime, misrepresented themselves, poses a risk to public safety, or "abused any programme related to receipt of public benefits".

The new guidelines also allow Border Patrol and Immigration and Customs Enforcement to deport people immediately.

Expedited deportations can now be used against undocumented immigrants anywhere in the US, who are unable to prove they have been in the country for more than two years.

Previously, expedited removals were applied to people who had been in the country for less than two weeks and were within 100 miles of the border.

An estimated 11 million undocumented immigrants live in the US, many of them from Mexico.

What has Mexico said?

Mr Videgaray said on Wednesday that Mexico would not accept the new rules. "We are not going to accept that because we don't have to and it is not in the interest of Mexico."

"We also have control of our borders and we will exercise it fully," he added.

He said his country was prepared to go to the United Nations to defend the freedoms and rights of Mexicans under international law.

Roberto Campa, head of the human rights department of Mexico's interior ministry, said the plan to deport non-Mexicans to Mexico was "hostile" and "unacceptable".

Relations between the US and Mexico have been tense under Mr Trump, who has said Mexico will pay for a wall he wants to build on the southern border, expected to cost billions of dollars.

Last month, Mr Pena Nieto cancelled a planned meeting with the US president in Washington over disagreements over the wall.

What has the US said?

President Donald Trump made immigration and border control a key part of his campaign.

The government said the new guidelines would not usher in mass deportations, but were designed to empower agents to enforce laws already on the books.

Earlier, in Guatemala, Mr Kelly reinforced that the measures did not signal mass deportations.

"We will be looking primarily at criminal offenders first. But there will be no mass round-ups, and when we do take someone into custody, they're then put into the American legal justice system, that's the courts, and the courts will decide what'll happen to them," he told reporters.

Despite the tensions, White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer said on Wednesday that the relationship with Mexico was "phenomenal right now".

He said he expected a "great discussion" between US and Mexican officials. The talks are expected to also include drug trafficking and the North American Free Trade Agreement, among other issues.

What a flaming pile of horseshit! Even for Spicer it stunk! I support Mexico completely on this. If someone from Guatemala or El Salvador comes across the border into the US, why in the hell should Mexico agree to accept them back from the Border Patrol? Fuck 'em! They're not Mexicans. In fact many more Mexicans are going BACK to Mexico then are coming to the States! They're not Mexico's problem! Mexico should shove them right back across the border into the US!

And this whole idea of kicking them all out of the US is moronic anyway! First of all it can't be done. Second of all it would cause a huge wound to America's economy! I mean does anyone REALLY think that Americans are going to go into the fields and pick the tomatoes and lettuce and sugar beets? If you throw them out without a real guest worker program or a real path to citizenship then get ready for $10 tomatoes and $20 heads of lettuce. Want to pay %40 for breakfast at IHOP? How about $200 to stay at a high-wayside Holiday Inn?

Plus Mexico could simply refuse to stop cooperation with the DEA when it comes to drugs going across Mexico or being grown in Mexico and into the USA. I mean remember we are the ultimate consumers of these drugs. The demand is HERE!

That idiot Trump needs to realize that Mexico is not some 51st state  or 3rd world nation South of our border that has to do whatever we tell them to. They are a sovereign nation. With their own government, natural resources, money, military, etc. He'd better start showing some respect, instead of thinking he can just push them around or the anti-American hate from 20 years ago will come back in Mexico and that will hurt both countries.

The last couple of days Tilerson and Kelly where in Mexico mending fences.

I'm sure that there is concern after a bill was brought up in the Mexican government to stop buying corn from the U.S. Mexico is the biggest buyer of U.S. corn that is exported.

When Mexico, one of the world's largest buyer of corn, decides to buy their corn from Brazil, then maybe Trump and his trade negotiators will pull their heads out of their asses and realize that the trade agreements that are in place now did not just happen. Perhaps he will also get past this raw stupidity of insisting on individual trade agreements with individual countries, instead of groups of nations where we both have lots to negotiate with, lots to offer and many ways to profit. He needs to understand that international trade has been going on for centuries before he was born and that just because he is sitting in the White House pretending to be President does not make him some kind of magical fairy king that automatically gives him some sort of special inside knowledge (because lord knows all of his business debacles and bankruptcies sure didn't) that gives him some kind of magical insight to where he gains special knowledge to change long standing agreements that have stood the test of time, just because he wants to make it look like he is doing "something" even though what he is doing is doing much more harm then good. In other words when it come to trade, he's an idiot.

You guys crack me up.  I don't think either of you are really silly enough to believe Mexico could win this kind of "trade war" with the US.  (or stupid enough to start one for that matter)  If it is true we are trying to deport people that are not Mexican to Mexico he has a beefon that point.  Otherwise, if he is trying to dictate what we do with illegals in our country the repercussions should be severe.    For decades Mexico has been telling us not to send illegal Mexicans back there.   It's bullshit.

Then Mexico shouldn't start one.

Randy mentioned that Mexico could retaliate by buying its corn from Brazil instead of us. If they did, it would be Mexico starting a trade war. You apparently agree with 96 that a trade war would not be in anybody's best interest. I agree with the both of you.

Trump can't deport non-Mexicans to Mexico unless Mexico agrees to act as an intermediary in a process to deport them back to Central America. However, I fully support Trump's efforts to deport as many illegal aliens as possible. Once illegal aliens see that we're serious, many will self-deport. Also, Obama imoeded states from assisting in deportation efforts. Trump should do just the opposite and encourage states to turn illegal aliens over to ICE every time they discover them (especially in the criminal system).

As for Mexico, their immigration laws are much more severe than ours. They wouldn't tolerate for one second Central American countries dumping illegal aliens in Mexico. The only way Central Americans are successfully crossing Mexico's southern border is because Mexico is letting them do it on the assumption that they're just passing through on their way here. Mexico also does little to prevent their nationals from crossing into the US because they want the illegal aliens in the US to send money to family in Mexico as part of a social safety net that is no cost to the Mexican government.

I don't care what Mexico says or does. Illegal immigration needs to stop. If Mexico wants to fight about it, then let's fight and get this fixed. The fight is long overdue.

I agree the US has been complacent on illegal aliens and crossings form Mexico for far too long.
