Every green cot has regularly been filled for years. Now most of the beds are empty.
EL PASO, Texas – Kari Lenander runs migrant shelters in west Texas and New Mexico where every green cot has regularly been filled for years.
Now most of the beds are empty.
Along the U.S.-Mexico border, migrant apprehensions plunged by more than two-thirds in July from a year ago, to the lowest level of the Biden era, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection statistics provided to USA TODAY.
Migrant crossings have declined every month for the past five months. The results mark a rare victory on one of the Biden administration's toughest political battlefronts, as Vice President Kamala Harris prepares for next week’s Democratic National Convention. CBP is expected to publicly release the new border data Friday.
"The numbers have indeed decreased and have decreased significantly," Homeland Security Sec. Alejandro Mayorkas told USA TODAY. "The reason for it is not singular. It is a number of different measures that we and others have taken."
Those measures include the creation of new, lawful pathways for migrants to enter the United States in an orderly way, Mayorkas said; consequences for crossing illegally; tougher restrictions on asylum; and hard-won diplomacy with Mexico, Guatemala, Panama and Colombia as those countries boost their own border enforcement and humanitarian relief programs.
A few brief words of advice for any idiot who may be among us
It is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot-- than to open it and remove all doubt!

I read Abbot was pissed he couldn't fill a bus with new migrants and send them to the DNC next week.
I read the sam earticle...and its true. The number of immigrants crossing our Southern border has plummeted.
Its beginning to look like now the Republicans will have to fall back on the issues people really care about.
For example, should Tampons dispensers be placed in girls bathrooms?
Did Tim Walz lie once...some 40 years ago? Is Kamala Harris campaign too joyful-- and painting a positive picture of America and Americans? Should we betray our friends (such as the Ukraine and our true friends in NATO?)
Oooops-- my bad!
I "accidentally" forgot the /sarcasm tag!
They will continue with attempts on the character of both Harris and Walz. I don't think it will work. I was just reading that Vance is the most unfavorable running mate pick in the last 20 years. More so than Sarah Palin. Where as Walz has an unusually high favorability rating.
Biden's Executive Order issued in June reinstates Trump's restrictions on accepting asylum requests. Biden has essentially shut down the border except through ports of entry. And, yes, liberals are enraged.
The so-called bipartisan immigration bill that failed in the Senate would not have required Biden to be this tough on border crossings. Biden has severely restricted asylum seeking to conform to existing immigration laws using an EO. So, the immigration bill wasn't really about securing the southern border since Biden has accomplished that without the new law.
The chart only shows the number of encounters through May, 2024, so doesn't include the impact of Biden's restrictions on asylum seekers. The chart shows that Biden lost control of the southern border early in his administration and Biden may have only regained control now by reinstating some of Trump's policies.
So, you don't trust the ACLU as a reliable source of information?
Because Mayorkas is a reliable source. He's a joke.
LOL!
"Plummeted" but the border is still open.
If we only had somebody tasked with securing the border, maybe a "Border Czar". Oh wait...
