The latest narrative
"There was a story ten days ago that said this is the worst April for the stock market since the Great Depression. Ten days later, the Nasdaq is now up on the month of April, and I haven't seen a story that says 'stock market has biggest bounce back ever.'" ...Scott Bessent

Yesterday's edition of ABC's "This Week" highlights what has become the leftwing news's new narrative. As Trump hits his first hundred days mark polls indicate that many Americans are unhappy with the ride thus far. Trump has fought to fulfill his promises, but he has come up against considerable headwinds from the established order and resistance from the left as indicated by over 71 lawsuits and many nationwide injunctions. The nation has heard mostly negative commentary regarding the early rollout of the Trump policies, thus comes the recent CNN poll the left is pushing:

"In the mid-April poll, released Sunday, 41 percent of respondents say they approve of the job Trump is doing as president, while 59 percent disapprove. That’s down four points from March, when 45 percent approved, and 54 percent disapproved. In late February, Trump had a 48 percent approval rating with 52 percent disapproving."

Trump approval rating slips to 41 percent after almost 100 days in office: CNN poll

Yesterday, Leftwing hack Martha Raddatz began the ABC Sunday show with an interview of a small business owner in Maryland who sells accessories for dogs. The idea was to demonstrate how tariffs would harm small business. The man said he gets most of his products from China and has bought a years' worth of inventory to get ahead of the tariffs. The most important part of that interview came at the very end when Raddatz asked "What if Trump was successful in getting those products made here?" I don't think she even thought about the answer that came back. The man said he wouldn't like it because America pays its workers more and thus the cost would be more. Imagine that?

Then Raddatz had what may be Trump's best cabinet pick: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent as her special guest. Bessent immediately called her out and accused the media of spreading a fake narrative about Trump’s stock market. He said: "There was a story ten days ago that said this is the worst April for the stock market since the Great Depression. Ten days later, the Nasdaq is now up on the month of April, and I haven't seen a story that says 'stock market has biggest bounce back ever.'" He also told her that the dissatisfaction about the current stage of Trump policies has been "media driven." The interview ended with the usual Trump quote by an ABC host, in this case claiming that Trump said trade deals had been negotiated. Bessent pointed out that Trump was referring to the minor parts of deals and that serious negations were still going on and that 17 countries have been designated as key trading partners. Bessent pretty much won the day.

We all need to keep in mind that these kinds of changes don't come easy. Trade deals do take time. When the UK withdrew from the EU they had to negotiate new trade deals. To date they are still working on many of them. When Trump took up a peace deal with Ukraine and Russia, nobody knew how unreasonable both sides could be. Putin does not seem to want to end the war. On that one Trump tried, but peace can't come without commitment from those involved. Let us hope that with time Trump prevails on everything else.

In the news:

28themorning-lead-bqmp-jumbo.jpg
Canada votes today. The Conservative Party’s Pierre Poilievre, 45 faces off against the Liberal Party’s Mark Carney, who has attempted to make the election about Trump tariffs. Will Canadians vote for normalcy?

Marco Rubio, the secretary of state, said the U.S. would decide this week if any more effort should be spent on a Ukraine-Russia peace deal.

In Colorado, federal agents raided a nightclub and detained more than 100 people who appear to be illegal immigrants.

At meetings this week, cardinals will jockey to become the next Pope.

In six weeks, the U.S. military has very successfully hit more than 800 targets in Yemen. The media has given it very little coverage.

In response to a terrorist attack in Kashmir, India told almost all Pakistanis to leave the country.

The farms that grew almonds etc once had workers spending hours on each tree. Today a farmer hires a single man with a special machine to do it all. The farmer sits from his front porch and watches with a glass of iced tea.

The same around here, 15 - 20 years ago there were migrant camps in the area for hoeing and blocking beets, weeding fields, picking cucumbers, etc., you would see crews in the fields, but the state  and OSHA stepped in and started demanding the farmers provide more and more to the migrants, most were satisfied with the way it was, others demanded they needed a union.  Now with mechanism, more consistent planters, GMO seeds, better harvesters, the migrants are gone.

Cucumber harvesters in this area can easily harvest 20 acres a day per machine, starting from mid-July to mid-September, of course there is a matching planting season per day so all the cucumbers don't reach harvest at the same time.

Even back then they were paid very well, cucumbers for example, whatever the farmer got at market the workers got half of it.  If it didn't pay well they wouldn't have kept coming back year after year to do the work.

We do have migrant workers in the area again, but for a different crop, cannabis.  Those that were undocumented seemed to have disappeared this year.

Pelley went rogue at the end of Sunday night’s episode during what appeared to be a simple tribute to  Bill Owens , the longtime “60 Minutes” executive producer who quit last week over the company’s heavy-handed interference.

Possible good news, depending on your point of view:

KYIV, Ukraine — Russia’s President Vladimir Putin on Monday declared a three-day cease-fire in Ukraine on May 8-10 to mark the World War II Victory Day, as U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration decides whether a deal to end the  more than three-year war is  within reach.

The Kremlin said that the truce will start at 0000 on May 8 (2100 GMT May 7) and last through the end of May 10, adding that Putin ordered the full cessation of hostilities on “humanitarian grounds” to mark the May 9 holiday celebrating the defeat of Nazi Germany.

There was no immediate reaction from Ukraine, which has previously agreed to Trump’s proposal of a full 30-day cease-fire.

Russia declares three-day cease-fire in Ukraine to celebrate World War II Victory Day

russian-president-vladimir-putin-listens-103349737_cf3be2.jpg?w=1024

This would commemorate what the Russians called the Patriotic War when Soviet soldiers were sacrificed at the rate of 7 casualties for every German casualty and the Red Army raped two million German women and sent many thousands of German prisoners into forced labor. The map of eastern Europe was redrawn, and the Ukraine was a centerpiece of that war.

Now do I believe Trump supporting conservatives wanted any of our soldiers to die during the Afghanistan withdrawal? Of course not, but they sure loved using that to attack Biden and the Democrats.

The man said he wouldn't like it because America pays its workers more and thus the cost would be more. Imagine that?

Okay, how is this not rational?   Who wants to pay more for anything?   Most people try to spend the least they can for goods and services (while maintaining a level of quality) because money they save enables them to buy more.

So why is it good for Trump to (try to) force products to be made in the USA if the manufacturing is labor-intensive and thus much higher labor costs than if made in other lands?   The concept of lower costs is quintessential capitalism.   It is the use of lower foreign labor that has enabled the USA standard of living.

Obviously, lower costs is good for businesses and for consumers.   Let's now turn to wages.

It is good for American workers to have higher wages.   That gives domestic consumers more buying power.   But that only works in the USA (nowadays) if the workers are highly leveraged — doing jobs that require the intelligence and talents of human beings.   For example, Amazon uses autonomous mobile robots which bring pods containing products to stationary human workers.  Human beings oversee the operations for a cell, address failures, etc. but are not moving about the warehouse picking and transporting goods.   Those few human workers are engaged in higher level functions (managing a cell) while the robots perform the very simplistic tasks of executing a pick ticket.

It is no longer feasible in the USA to have human beings doing all of this low-level work.   Human beings are very expensive and those costs must be incorporated into the price consumers pay.   So the idea of bringing back labor-intensive manufacturing as it was in the 1970s and before is essentially impossible.   It will never happen.   The manufacturing suitable for the USA is AI-based robotic.

Trump is an idiot to believe he can bring back labor-based manufacturing jobs.

What are you talking about??   I stated that most people prefer to pay less for the same product or service.   You come back babbling about Biden.

Most people try to spend the least they can for goods and services (while maintaining a level of quality) because money they save enables them to buy more.

A decent wage is what would allow people to buy more. I thought we supported UNIONS in this country. Why do we let imported cars made with cheap labor undercut the US auto industry? Shouldn't we make it a trade requirement that only car makers with similar labor costs be allowed to sell cars in the US?

It is no longer feasible in the USA to have human beings doing all of this low-level work.   Human beings are very expensive and those costs must be incorporated into the price consumers pay.   So the idea of bringing back labor-intensive manufacturing as it was in the 1970s and before is essentially impossible.

That is in direct contradiction to allowing another 12 million unskilled laborers into the US.

Trump is an idiot to believe he can bring back labor-based manufacturing jobs.

It was Bill Clinton and those who followed him that betrayed the middle class.

You reject the fact that lower prices allow people to buy more???    Of course higher wages allow people to buy more.   And even with higher wages they will seek to pay the least the can for the same quality.   Obviously, right?

Why do we let imported cars made with cheap labor undercut the US auto industry?

You want to force consumers to pay higher prices for vehicles in order to support labor-based manufacturing??    Are you no longer a free market capitalist?   You want government (in this case Trump) to control what you can buy?   Do you not see the parallel of that with the former USSR??

That is in direct contradiction to allowing another 12 million unskilled laborers into the US.

Deflection.   The point is that 1970s era labor-intensive manufacturing is not coming back to the USA.

It was Bill Clinton ...

One deflection after another with you.  Trump is an idiot to believe he can bring back labor-based manufacturing jobs.

I grew up in a country where one family member could support an entire family, when home ownership was within reach of hard-working people and the average price of a car didn't require a loan. When those who were eligible for college, didn't wind up with loan debt for the rest of their lives. You'll forgive me if I want that America back.

Are you no longer a free market capitalist?

No. China ended that. I want protectionism. Everywhere I look I see young couples both working and they can barely get by.

The point is that 1970s era labor-intensive manufacturing is not coming back to the USA.

Why not? What is the middle of the country to do?  What happened to ship building? We went into WWII with 4 aircraft carriers and came out of it with about 11 Fleet Carriers and about 70 Escort Carriers. We were the arsenal of democracy that supplied all our allies. We only have 3 places to build ships now.

Trump is an idiot to believe he can bring back labor-based manufacturing jobs.

He has a very big card to play. America is the great marketplace.  Let us produce again.

You can wish for the past to return (a romanticized one at that) but that is both naive and irrational.   And worse, believing that this is what Trump is trying to deliver is beyond sad.

I want protectionism. Everywhere I look I see young couples both working and they can barely get by.

That is a losing global strategy.   We should be working to grow out GDP, not trying to carve out our own little piece.  Good grief man, we are living in a global economy.

Why not?

Because it is not competitive.

Trump has no means to bring 70s style labor-based manufacturing back into the USA.   It is not possible.   He is a fool if he even thinks it possible.

And those who are worried about jobs should be aghast at that chaotic firing taking place by Trump.

Donald Trump was re-elected to be popular?  Was I watching a completely different election in 2024?  Even the bad 100 day polling being bandied about show that people still think Donald Trump was the better choice.

It's an odd poll, indeed, that says voters don't like what Trump is doing but do not regret electing Trump.  Has anyone seen 'right track/wrong direction' polling?  Or is the progressive left trying to hide that?

It only required 100 days to completely upend the progressive liberal world order; without firing a shot.  The exquisitely complex, undeniably liberal, interconnected global order governed by the rule of biased law couldn't survive a few missed welfare checks from the United States.  Donald Trump has changed the global political landscape in only 3 months.  Ain't it a wonder!

No legitimate journalist would write that.

In rightwing conservative minds, any journalist that isn't metaphorically down on their knees sucking off Donald Trump is considered a "Leftwing hack". These cultists love their Dear Leader so much they simply can't imagine how anyone wouldn't love and revere their beloved Mango Mussolini.
