Singer Lee Greenwood announces he'll be performing at the second inauguration of President-elect Donald Trump on 'Fox & Friends.'

Democratic California Gov. Gavin Newsom will temporarily raise the American Flag at the state Capitol to full height on Inauguration Day next week, joining a handful of GOP governors and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson in the decision.

Newsom's press office confirmed the decision to Fox News Digital on Wednesday night.

Following tradition, flags at the U.S. Capitol and state buildings across the country are flying at half-staff because of the death of former President Jimmy Carter on Dec. 29, 2024.

Flags temporarily raised to full height will return to half-staff on Jan. 21 for the remainder of the 30-day mourning period, which ends on Jan. 28 - eight days after President-elect Donald Trump will be sworn into office.

As of Thursday morning, Newsom is the only Democratic governor to issue the directive, which comes as Southern California is ravaged by catastrophic wildfires.

Similar decisions were recently made by Idaho Gov. Brad Little, North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey, Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds and Texas Gov. Greg Abbott - all of whom are Republicans.

House Speaker Johnson also ordered that flags at the U.S. Capitol fly at full-staff for Trump's inauguration on Jan. 20.

Trump has criticized the potential for flags to be displayed at half-staff for his inauguration following Carter's death.

"The Democrats are all 'giddy' about our magnificent American Flag potentially being at 'half mast' during my Inauguration," Trump wrote on Truth Social on Jan. 3. "They think it's so great, and are so happy about it because, in actuality, they don't love our Country, they only think about themselves."

"Look at what they've done to our once GREAT America over the past four years - It's a total mess! In any event, because of the death of President Jimmy Carter, the Flag may, for the first time ever during an Inauguration of a future President, be at half mast," he continued. "Nobody wants to see this, and no American can be happy about it. Let's see how it plays out. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!"

President-elect Trump has criticized the possibility of the flag flying at half-staff during his inauguration on Jan. 20 despite it falling during the 30-day mourning period following the death of former President Jimmy Carter.(Donald Trump/Truth Social)

Flags were flown at half-staff when former President Nixon was sworn-in for his second term in 1973 after Nixon ordered the flags to be lowered following the death of former President Truman.

Of course it does.

To some on the left, any comment, action, suggestion, etc, that is positive of Trump automatically makes you a MAGA Trump ass kisser.

Ask any of them here.

Nope. Just desperate leftist liberal governor trying to score points with the incoming administration to try to insure federal funding after the fire.

But, Biden has already said that the Feds will cover 100% of the losses.

Now, why hasn't that been discussed???

Biden can also say he didn't take showers with his daughter, doesn't make it true, Congress controls the purse, so any money will come from them. I would attach strings on immigration, that will show us quickly who California cares more about.

This is not complicated. Trump ALWAYS threatens people who dont bow and scrape before him. Newsom knows California will need federal help in the aftermath of the fires, so why should he risk Trump throwing a tantrum  over the position of the flag?  Its better from Newsoms perspective to just humor the asshole over the flag "controversy".

This is no victory for Trump, it is more evidence that he is demented.

So basically Newsom has no integrity, or he needs to be afraid of the all powerful trump. Amazing.

Why does Trump give a shit about where the flag is flying on inauguration day?  When you can answer that question then you will know why Newsom is "obeying".

Why does Trump give a shit about where the flag is flying on inauguration day?

Because knowing of some of the left's unhinged thought processes, they can use the flag at half staff as a "sign to come" for the Trump term as half staff shows the country is in mourning for something.

Raising the flag for one day will not make a difference with anything except for the triggered left.

DeSantis hasn't said that trump isn't his President, He is probably doing it out of respect for the presidency, I don't agree with the move, but i understand it, according to John, Newsom is doing it out of fear because he is trumps bitch.

The flags should be at half-staff - it is an established tradition and practice and Jimmy Carter was a great man that deserves the respect and acknowledgment of the American people (including Trump)

Trump's only reason is his ego - he is so afraid that someone will be focused on anything other than him is maniacal and sad.

Carter was not a great president, and neither will Trump ever be considered a great president - the difference Carter is considered (deservedly) to be a great man and Trump will never have that acknowledgement.

I doubt that this small gesture is going to raise the opinion that Trump has of Newsome or vice versa

I agree.

I don't know that I understand why we couldn't have a compromise, though.  Raise the flag during the inauguration and lower it again afterward.

The inauguration of a new president is also an important tradition.  It's one I think too many of us take for granted because we've never lived without it or the freedom it represents. Regardless of who wins, it should be a time of at least small celebration and acknowledgement of the rare privilege we have as Americans of self governance.

Even in monarchies of old, the phrase "the king is dead, long live the king" acknowledged that grief over the passing of one leader while simultaneously embracing the new.  There isn't any reason we can't do that as well.

Perhaps raising the flag for the inauguration and then lowering it again is a reasonable course of action in this scenario, but I don’t believe any other president-elect would have even brought the issue up. It maybe could have been a discreet conversation between incoming and outgoing administrations, but we never got the chance to do this like grownups. Instead, Trump was on social media, whining like a self-absorbed brat.

This was never about the country. It has always been about Trump’s ego.

I can see that. and it has precedent.

How many here know the proper protocol for flying the flag on Memorial Day?

From sunrise to noon it is to be flown at half staff/mast , to honor those who have fallen . from noon to sunset , it is flown at full staff/ mast.

I have seen it done all 3 ways , half staff all day , full staff all day , and the proscribed protocol.

i dont think most really ever notice .

Yes.

And also yes.

But at the end of the day it's not really that important.

Yeah, as an isolated incident, it’s not important. Also, it’s not like it’s a matter of national security or economic stability. It’s purely protocol.

But as part of a pattern, it’s exhausting. We put up with new petty bullshit from him every day.

Eight years ago, on the occasion of his previous inauguration, he needlessly fabricated a fantasy about it being the biggest crowd ever at an inauguration. Even if that were true - and it wasn’t - why make a big deal out of it?

Throughout the intervening eight years, Trump has tortured America with the bizarre need to satisfy his ego with utter horseshit, and it is demoralizing for much of the country.

That's true.

Personally, I find him easier to ignore than the group of people who go into some sort of emotional distress over every single thing he does.

Folks need to pick some battles and stick to a manageable number of meaningful issues.

Even if that were true - and it wasn’t - why make a big deal out of it?

Because he's massively insecure and it drives him to self-aggrandize.
