The federal government is demanding the state remove double-stacked shipping containers placed to fill gaps in the wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, saying they are unauthorized and violate U.S. law.

The Cocopah Indian Tribe in southwestern Arizona welcomed the call to take down the containers in the latest rift between the Biden administration and Republican-led border states over how to prevent illegal border crossings.

The Bureau of Reclamation also demanded in last week's letter that no new containers be placed. It said the bureau wants to prevent conflicts with two federal contracts that have been awarded and two more still pending to fill border wall gaps near the Morelos Dam in the Yuma, Arizona, area.

"The unauthorized placement of those containers constitutes a violation of federal law and is a trespass against the United States," the letter states. "That trespass is harming federal lands and resources and impeding Reclamation's ability to perform its mission."

There was no immediate response Monday from Republican Gov. Doug Ducey's office, but it said in the past it would remove the containers if the U.S. government starts construction to fill the gaps.

The tribe complained last month that the state of Arizona acted against its wishes by placing 42 of the double stacks on its land near Yuma to halt illegal border crossings in an area that has become a major entry point for migrants.

"We believe the Bureau is taking the necessary and appropriate action to resolve this issue," the Cocopah tribe said in a statement distributed Monday. "Beyond that, we will continue working side-by-side with local, state and federal law enforcement on securing the border."

Ducey ordered installation of more than 100 double-stacked containers that were placed over the summer, saying he couldn't wait for the U.S. Customs and Border Protection to award the contracts it had announced for work to fill the gaps in the border wall in the Yuma area.

Story continues

Migrants nevertheless have continued to avoid the recently erected barriers by going around them, including through the Cocopah Indian Reservation.

The border wall promoted by former President Donald Trump continues to be a potent issue for Republican politicians hoping to show their support for border security.

President Joe Biden halted wall construction his first day in office, leaving billions of dollars of work unfinished but still under contract. Trump worked at the end of his term to reach more than 450 miles (720 kilometers), nearly a quarter of the border.

The Biden administration has made a few exceptions for small projects at areas deemed unsafe for people to cross, including the gaps near Yuma.

The quibble over the containers close to Yuma underscores the obstacles faced when constructing barriers on the southern U.S. border. Building on tribal land, including in the Tohono O'odham Nation in Arizona, can face opposition. Landowners, especially in Texas, where much property is privately owned, also can refuse to sign off on construction.

Ducey, like fellow Republican Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, has often sparred with the Democratic administration over immigration policies. Both states in recent months have been offering free bus rides to the East Coast for asylum seekers who are released in the United States to pursue their cases.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has arranged private flights of Venezuelans from San Antonio, Texas to Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts.

"Arizona did the job the federal government has failed to do — and we showed them just how quickly and efficiently the border can be made more secure — if you want to," Ducey said when the containers were installed in southern Arizona.

Apparently showing up the Democrats makes them cry.

Of course the Biden administration wants it removed as it is hindering unimpeded flow of illegals being allowed to cross into the US. Seems to me the feds are trying to stick their noses into what should be a state's right issue.

That's the problem.  It IS the federal government's job to secure the border.  When they fail (and they have been) the states step in.  With that the federal government gets all pissy that they are shown to be failing.

Trump worked at the end of his term to reach more than 450 miles (720 kilometers), nearly a quarter of the border.

For all Trumps and his boot licking sycophant's bluster he built 15 miles of new wall where none existed previously.

Then Brandon halted construction that would have filled gaps and placed new walls. Materials rusted in place; contracts had to be paid; for doing nothing!

According to the report, titled "President Biden is Wasting Billions by Not Building the Border Wall" , subcommittee Ranking Member James Lankford finds that between $1.837 billion and $2.087 billion of taxpayer dollars have been wasted since Biden’s inauguration, and that this fiscal drain increases by at least $3 million per day. Lankford notes that at the end of the Trump administration, approximately $10 billion had been transferred to two Department of Defense accounts for border wall construction and related projects, known as DOD 2802 Accounts and DOD 284 Accounts. Based on interactions with DOD employees, the GOP learned that DOD 2802 accounts fund military construction projects and that there were seven border wall-related projects suspended by President Biden. Initially, the suspension resulted in $6 million a day in taxpayer waste, but after laying off some contractors the waste is down to $3 million a day. As explained in the report, “the Federal government is paying contractors on these seven projects $3 million per day to drive out to project sites and guard the unused pallets of steel and other construction materials.” Lankford estimates that between January 20 and July 15, DOD has paid the contracts between $618 and $708 million to babysit materials, and that it will take from 12 to 18 months to terminate the contracts. Citing government statements from pending litigation, the DOD 2802 funds wasted will total between $798 million and $1.048 billion by the end of the calendar year. The waste of taxpayer dollars is similarly astonishing for the mismanagement of the DOD 284 accounts, which fund counter-drug and counternarcotic activities. For these accounts, DOD estimates that at least $624 million will be spent in contract claims and termination costs plus an additional $415 million in suspension costs. Like the DOD 2802 accounts, it will take between 12 and 18 months to terminate the projects. From the same litigation referenced above, DOD pegs the total cost of suspension and termination costs for projects funded by DOD 284 accounts at $1.039 billion.

So shove the "but Trruuummmmppppp!!!!!" bullshit. Brandon the Human Fuck Up Machine hasn't done anything except cost taxpayers billions cancelling what was already paid for!

Got a big load of that material sitting here in Cochise County on the border in AZ outside of Douglas and Bisbee. As the article said just sitting there taking up space and rusting away. More of it in Yuma, AZ on the other side of the state. Thanks a heap Joe!

No matter how you spin this, it doesn't look good for the current administration.  The BIDEN ADMINISTRATION stopped construction of the border wall only to be told by a federal judge that they have to continue it.

It is the BIDEN ADMINISTRATION telling Arizona to stop securing the border.  Almost like they want illegals to cross the border.  I wonder why that is.

Funny how the liberal left does not seem to care less about or mention the thousands of people Biden put out of work with his idiotic policies that stopped the wall dead  in it's tracks! Thank you Joe for another "I did that!" moment.

The idiots on the left will even go as far as denying thousands were left unemployed by Biden and his edicts.

Yep, they did not fall under his agenda and thus just became collateral damage that he found acceptable to sweep under the cactus patch. One of my nephew's was making good money working on the wall outside of Douglas, AZ. Afterwards he had to gather up his family and relocate to Phoenix three hours away. He went through some hard times till he got a good construction job and is trying to put what Biden did to him and others behind him and move forward.

And now Arizona is pushing back on the Biden Administration.

The administration of  Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey  is pushing back against a demand by the Biden administration that it take down a number of shipping containers it has used to plug a gap in the incomplete border wall, saying that border states "cannot rely on the federal government to ensure its security."

There is no doubt about what Biden's handlers want. It is for the southern border to remain open.
