As long as she is crying, everything is still okay.

So, as many, if not all of you know, Shelly and I have a daughter, Milla, who will be celebrating her first birthday on June 6th.

Well, Milla hasn't been feeling too great over the last couple days, and has been running a bit of a fever. Last night, her fever peaked at 101 degrees. We gave her some children's aspirin drops and tried to keep her hydrated and comfortable. Clearly though, it was a pretty miserable few days for her, and for us as well. For me personally, everything is a learning experience, especially in light of the fact that she is my only child. Shelly has another daughter, Trinity, but I'm not claiming that fact makes dealing with something like a fever any easier. Pretty sure it doesnt actually.

Anyway, we laid her down on the bed between us and went to sleep around midnight last night. Most days, my first alarm goes off at 3:45 A.M., and I guess I am keyed to that time a little bit, because I just happened to wake up at 3:43, just before that alarm would normally have gone off. Turns out, it was a different alarm of sorts that went off in my sleeping mind. I'm not sure if Milla was making some noises or what have you, or maybe tossing around a bit, but as I woke up, I looked over at her. At that moment, her eyes shot open and she vomited. I sat her up and started to clean her off. Shelly heard all that of course and got up as well. She picked Milla up and started to try to comfort her.

I guess Milla's eyes rolled back for a second, and Shelly asked me to grab the aspirin again, because she was scared that Milla might end up having a seizure, apparently a common occurrence with babies who run a high fever. Well, I think you can guess what happened next. Febrile seizure lasting about 30 seconds. I called 911, who showed up approximately 5 minutes after calling. We got everybody loaded up in the ambulance and headed off to Primary Children's Hospital, which fortunately is only a few minutes from where we live.

Shelly rode in the back with one of the EMS guys while I rode shotgun. I could hear Milla crying, and I thought to myself, "As long as she is crying, everything is still okay." Well, Milla is still a bit sick now, but she is dong much better. The doctor told us that her urinalysis came back good and all systems were operating just fine. She falls under the category of normal risk of another seizure, which is about 33% for the year after having your first seizure, and diminishes each year after that. Turns out they are pretty common as things go, and since hers didnt last very long, and only happened once, her risk is at the low end of the normal spectrum.

Today, she was pretty much her normal happy self, but with a bit of the fever still after getting back from the hospital and nodding off for a bit.

So, our first official emergency with Milla. Quite the draining experience.

btw....that is one of my Milla stock photos taken a few months ago.

That is one scary story, Peter. You and Shelly must have had some fright, but I am glad that things turned out well at the end.

BTW, Catherine had one of thoseseizures, at about Mila's age, but with no fever. Never happened again, so I wouldn't worry.

She's really adorable in that picture!

I appreciate the well wishes. She seems to be doing fine now. Fever is gone and no more seizures.
