NEW MOVIE QUIZ IDEA - MACGUFFIN CLUES

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A COMMENT, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE QUIZ FOR EVERYONE ELSE.     POST THEM IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.

Don't forget that I'm on the other side of the world (of most of you) and I could be asleep when you send your answers, so be patient - I will get to your PN as soon as I   can.

I seem to be running out of movies that are suitable to provide clues for, so I have a new idea. I will provide as a clue the MacGuffin that is relevant to a movie and you need to identify the movie from it. What is a MacGuffin?

In fiction, a "MacGuffin" — sometimes spelt "McGuffin" or "Macguffin" — is a plot device in the form of some goal, desired object, or other motivator that the protagonist (and sometimes the antagonist) is willing to do and sacrifice almost anything to pursue, often with little or no narrative explanation as to why it is considered so desirable. A MacGuffin, therefore, functions merely as "a plot element that catches the viewers' attention or drives the plot of a work of fiction". Common examples are money, victory, glory, survival, a source of power, a potential threat, a mysterious but highly desired item or object, or simply something that is entirely unexplained.

http://the.hitchcock.zone/wiki/MacGuffin

An example of a MacGuffin is the model of a falcon in the movie The Maltese Falcon.  Almost all the movies are ones I have used on previous quizzes, so you don't have too far to seek to determine the answer.  If the MacGuffin clue can logicly indicate a movie different than the one I used, I will be generous because this is an entirely new concept.  As it is, many of these should be fairly easy.  So give it a try and NAME THE MOVIES..

Thanks Charger.  I enjoy creating them as much as many have said they enjoy playing.

So far only four members have participated and the scores indicate to me that this is a difficult quiz to do well on, and in fact I don't think I will repeat this format because I don't want to discourage participants.  However, sixteen of the clues have been correctly identified by someone or other (not all by one player) and acceptable alternatives have been posted by someone or other for three of them, leaving only one that nobody has been able to answer.

UPDATE:  6 members have now participated and the scores are not so bad.  I really pity the NT members who would rather fight over political differences than do something that everyone who participates in these quizzes has fun doing.  At this point, 18 of the 20 questions have been correctly answered by someone or other, only 2 remaining a mystery.  A hint to everyone - don't bother to name movies that have been released only during the past 3 years as I will not have seen them or know about them so they are bound to not be acceptable answers.

I'm not a movie maven at all, don't do well so I'm not inclined to participate. But I think it's great that you create these quizzes.

Same here Pat. I have not been to a theater in about 20 years, and haven't owner a TV in at least 15-16 years. I am just not interested in the new stuff on TV, so there is no use in me paying the high cost of having one. I have an emergency radio and can read about and see what I want to know on the Internet.

So for me there is little I can participate in with the quizzes. But, as you say, it is great that Buzz dives the members something different to so than harangue each other every day over politics and religion.

This change was fun. It's always good to have to stretch the brain in a different than normal way.

UPDATE:  Nine members have participated at this point, and so far only two of the questions have not been correctly answered.  One of them was a movie that was on a recent quiz, and the other was a vintage movie I never used before that had a big cult following. I will close this quiz and announce the winners the day after tomorrow.  (The Day After Tomorrow, now that's a movie as well - now I'm using the titles in my comments. LOL)

...to announce the winners of this quiz.  Snuffy wins again - 16 out of 20.  Tied for second place with 15 each are Veronica, Kathleen and Perrie, while the third spot goes to Trout Giggles and MsAubrey who also tied with 10.  This was definitely a more difficult quiz, and Honourable Mention is awarded to Charger and Sandy each with 9.  I don't think I'll try the MacGuffin method again, but it will be a while before I can come up with enough movies that are suitable to post visual clues, so take a break, everyone.  Here are the answers - I can understand why nobody got number 20, but number 17 shouldn't have been the problem it was.

1.   Casablanca  -  Letters of Transit
2.   Pirates of the Caribbean  -  The Black Pearl
3.   Sleepless in Seattle  -  The movie An Affair to Remember
4.   The Third Man  -  Zither music soundtrack
5.   Any Star Wars Movie  -  The Force
6.   Any Lord of the Rings Movie  -  The Ring
7.   2001 - A Space Odyssey  -  Hal
8.   Grapes of Wrath  -  The Dust Bowl
9.   Philadelphia  -  HIV-AIDS
10.  Gone With The Wind  -  Tara
11.  The Shawshank Redemption  -  Rock Hammer
12.  Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Ark  -  Ark of the Covenant
13.  The Illusionist  -  The Orange Tree
14.  Gran Torino  -  A Ford Car
15.  Trading Places  -  A $1 Bet
16.  Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon  -  An Antique Sword
17.  The Maze Runner  -  The Wall
18.  The Natural  -  Wonderboy, Roy Hobbs' home made bat
19.  War Games  -  Joshua, the name of the son of the computer program's inventor that was the password to end the computer-driven impending atomic war
20.  Reefer Madness  -  A Joint - a symbol of the most famous cult movie about weed.

Thanks to all who tried.

You missed Honourable Mention by just one point - but granted, this was a tougher quiz than usual.
