MOVIE QUIZ - ROMANCE MOVIES
MOVIE QUIZ - ROMANCE MOVIES
PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A COMMENT, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE QUIZ FOR EVERYONE ELSE. POST THEM IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.
Don't forget that I am on the other side of the world (of most of you) and I could be asleep when you send your answers, so be patient - I will get to your PN as soon as I can.
PLEASE, PLEASE, READ WHAT IS BELOW IN ORDER TO GET A BETTER SCORE. I HAVE DECIDED TO BE MUCH MORE LENIENT IN MY SCORING AND HAVE DONE AWAY WITH MANY OF THE RULES. .
This time, besides the two image clues, the third clue is that the movie is a romance movie, although it could be combined with another genre like fantasy, comedy or even tragedy. None of the movies are very old, and only one goes as far back as the mid-1950s This time there are about the same number of movies that just identifying the images will tell you the title of the movie as there are those where the images are of an item or scenario that is a primary object or otherwise indicative of the plot or movie name, and you will probably have to have seen the movie to identify it. Quite a few of the questions were included in previous quizzes, but even if so I tried not to use the same image clues, and as usual I don't think any of the image clues are actual screen shots from the movies. I try to use clues that do not make it easy to do a web search, and since this is a test of your movie memory, web searching using web programs that identify movies from the clues is cheating.
THE RULES
Because I think I chased a lot of participants away since the rules were strict, this time I will be much more lenient and you will not lose score for not capitalizing or using proper punctuation or adding an extraneous or leaving off a "the" or "A", but I will have to make a decision between your just naming what the clues are and the actual movie name. Just identifying the images does not necessarily mean that you know the name of the movie. The images should be a CLUE to the ACTUAL name of the movie. Remakes with the same name will be acceptable. If you name movies that I feel the clues identify as well or better than the ones I used, I will accept it as well. TV programs and TV series such as West Wing are not answers, but I will accept TV movies like QB VII (which is an adaptation of a novel) or some miniseries if they are an adaptation of a novel that is too long for one showing and are spread out, like the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.
There are some hard ones, even some VERY hard ones to guess, and also some very easy ones, so give it a try and NAME THESE MOVIES.
Please number your answers the same as the images.

Here we go again. I have done away with most of the rules so you have much more leeway to get full scores. Hopefully that and the topic will attract as many participants as the War Movie quiz did, because Biographical movies kind of bombed. However, this time not as many clues will enable you to answer without having seen the movies. So, as always, please read the whole introduction above in order to get a good score, and remember...

Hmmm... ok, got 12 figured out and 8 more to go... I do like this quiz...
Thinking
I'll be back to try and figure it out. I've got a few just at initial glance.
I've gone through and looked at the clues, but, my mind is a blank at the moment. None of them seems to relate to any movies I have seen. But, I'll check back when my mind is clearer and see it I recognize anything.
Your problem is that you don't watch many movies. If numbers 3 and maybe 9, for example, were not immediately recognizable, then it will be difficult. PLEASE DON'T ANYONE POST THE ANSWERS FOR THEM HERE. However, keep in mind that my method of using clues has been difficult for others to figure out at first, but if they keep trying my quizzes they get to understand why I come up with them and their scores keep getting better.
True, Buzz. I admit I don't watch many movies now, and haven't for many years. There are just not that many movies that really interest me. So all I can do is guess from the clues at this point. I don't have a TV, so all the movies I do watch are on the Internet, and most of them are ones about history of the various countries I am interested in learning about.
I stopped going to theaters when my hearing began to get worse. Hearing aids are fine, but, not that great for indoor theaters.
I did pretty good on the one quiz, and I will keep trying on this one. (smile)
That's the spirit.
I might not be able to do many of the various quizes, but, I will do the ones I can. It is fun to see how many I can get right (if any...grin)
I don't know why I thought a romance movie quiz would be even more popular than a war movie one, but so far only four members have played, even though I've made getting full marks much easier. There are still 5 questions nobody has been able to answer.. I'll keep this one open until after the weekend. Maybe westerns will get a better response.
sorry, got tied up with work. Still need to get back, my answers are coming...
IMPORTANT NOTICE TO ALL: Due to my making a really dumb mistake, I have replaced the clues for the first question, and have given those who have already sent their answers the opportunity to increase their scores, as none of them have identified the first movie.
I had thought that as many members who watched war movies would watch romance movies as well, but I guess I was wrong. At this point only 6 have posted answers. Only two movies have not been identified by someone or other, and for one of those a different movie I did not know about fit the clues as well so it earned a point. Hopefully, the weekend will bring more participation.
I will close this quiz two days from now. Seven members have participated, and only one movie has not been identified by anyone, and I don't intend to replace it. It would be unfair to those who have already participated to give any hints about it, but I'm somewhat surprised that nobody has figured it out from the clues.
Eight members have participated, and still nobody has been able to answer number 14. If anyone still intends to try the quiz, do it today because I will be closing the quiz and announcing the winners in about 24 hours from now.
The quiz is now closed. I had thought that romance movies would be a lot more popular, but nine members did give it a try. The champion is Snuffy with a score of 16 out of 20, Veronica gets the silver with 15 and JohnRussell came in third with 13. Honourable Mention goes to Sandy with 11. Maybe my clues were a little tougher for this one. Only two members got The Great Gatsby, which surprised me. I thought that both clues were iconic symbols of considerable importance in both the Redford and DiCaprio versions. The blue flashing light indicated the blue flashing light in front of Daisy's mansion across the bay and was shown more than once in the movies, and had entranced Gatsby, and the eyeglass billboard near the gas station symbolically suggested that watching what happened there was of great importance. And the eyes in the clue were not blue.
The only movie that nobody could identify was number 14. Lynyrd Skynyrd sang a fairly well known song with the same title as the movie, and the main star was Reese Witherspoon who is not exactly an unknown. My choice of clues was using a "double wide" (a double-wide trailer made into a home), and a piece of glassware that had some resemblance to the kind that were produced by Melanie's (Reese Witherspoon's) husband using steel rods planted in sand struck by lightning, which was his business. When Melanie went into his store, she touched one with an uneven fluted rim, similar to the one I used as a clue. As for the "double-wide", Melanie's fiance's mother was the Mayor of NYC, who told Melanie's mother "Oh, go back to your double wide and fry something.", a big insult to that Southern lady, and Melanie punched her in the face and knocked her down. A very important incident during the time that Melanie had a change of heart about marrying the mayor's son. SWEET HOME ALABAMA. Did nobody see that movie? Here are the answers:
1. The Wedding Singer - a wedding scene & a singer
2. Pretty woman - a hooker & building a big ship
3. Titanic - an iceberg & a passenger ship (nobody missed this one)
4. The American President - The White House & a Virginia ham (a gift the POTUS gave to his Virginia girl friend)
5. The Princess Bride - a princess & a bride
6. Twilight - a twilight sky & a vampire
7. The Great Gatsby - a flashing blue light & spectacles (the sign)
8. 50 First Dates - the number 50 & dates (the fruit)
9. A Knight's Tale - jousting & the stocks
10. Coming to America - a restaurant & a black (chess) king
11. Dirty Dancing - a watermelon & dancing (Baby carried a watermelon to the staff dance, and said "I carried the watermelon."
12. The Shape of Water - an amphibious creature & sign language that the main actress had to use to communicate)
13. Ghost - a ghost & shaping clay into pottery on a wheel
14. Sweet Home Alabama - a double wide & unusual glassware (nobody got this one - see my comment about that)
15. Doctor Zhivago - a doctor & Russian symbols
16. Love Story - hearts & a story book (I was unaware of the movie "Love Book" and accepted that answer as okay)
17. You've Got Mail - a bookstore & a mailman delivering mail
18. Shakespeare In Love - Shakespeare portrait & cupid love symbol
19. The Longest Ride - man riding a bucking bull & a gallery of modern art (Only one member got this one right - perhaps it was not a well known movie. I read the novel but never saw the movie but the clues I used were very important in the movie)
20. An Affair to Remember - they met on a cruise ship & a wheelchair
Thanks to all who gave this one a try. I'm starting to work on my next quiz - Western movies.
Buzz
I've watched them all, I only figured out two of them the easiest ones of the bunch I suppose Titanic and Dr Zhivago... the only ones that made sense to me...
You've been away for a while and are not used to my using a lot of clues that are images that identify the words of the title of a movie. I use a mix of methods. I also use ones that display items or incidents in the movies, and for those it is probably required to have actually watched the movie. The iceberg and cruise ship were totally obvious clues and every participant identified it correctly, whereas nobody could identify Sweet Home Alabama. I suppose if I had used a box of sugar and a map of Alabama I could have made it easier, but if there are no challenges, how can the quizzes be fun to do? I make the challenges different levels of difficulty, which is indicated by variation in scores determined by what movies people watch as well as their ability to recall details from the movies they do watch.
I would have probably figured out the wedding singer and I knew Shakespeare's portrait, and I recognized the difference between the two white gowns I just couldn't connect them, the hooker hanging on the side of a sports car automatically had me thinking Pretty Woman but building a large cargo ship or passenger liner? didn't connect (they had a contract to build destroyers a much smaller ship than a cargo ship or liner)
I think in details my friend, and memes are the anathema to details... sometimes to understand memes you have to put aside details...
As I indicated in the introduction, and I encourage everyone to read it so they know the rules and what the concept is, the third clue in every case was that the movie had to be a romance. A couple of members called number 7, the Gatsby movies, Mickey Blue Eyes, but Mickey Blue Eyes is not a romance movie. The movie had to be a romance movie, and the eyes in the spectacles were not blue anyway, and why would I have used a FLASHING blue light if I only wanted to indicate a blue colour? As for the two white gowns. I look at the first one who is a young woman wearing a tiara and I would say to myself the word "princess", and then I would look at the second woman in a wedding dress and I would say to myself "bride". The clues were purposefully put in that order, it was not random, so think "princess" + "bride" - does that not make you think of a certain movie that is a romance? I couldn't find an image of a destroyer being built that would be recognizable as such, so I just showed a big ship being built. Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) turned his whole method of making money around by partnering with James Morse (Ralph Bellamy) so that was a really important fact in the movie and although they may have been warships, this was the announcement Morse made at the meeting:
James Morse : "Mr. Lewis and I are going to build ships together, great big ships."
So I posted a picture of a great big ship being built. The majority of participants got it right from my clues. Maybe your problem is you're TOO exacting with details for my quizzes.
100% agree my friend, comes from my engineering/historical training/background......
Never heard of The Longest Ride, and have never seen Sweet Home Alabama. I did see the Robert Redford Great Gatsby but I couldnt have told you what color the light was on Daisy's mansion for a million bucks.
From the Redford film':
And that billboard overlooking the gas station from the 1974 Redford version is an image one can never forget, so my clue should have been a reminder of a romantic movie from one's memory.
