SPORTS MOVIE QUIZ

800

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A COMMENT, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE QUIZ FOR EVERYONE ELSE.   POST THEM IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.

Don't forget that I am on the other side of the world (of most of you) and I could be asleep when you send your answers, so be patient - I will get to your PN as soon as I can.

PLEASE, PLEASE, READ WHAT IS BELOW IN ORDER TO GET A BETTER SCORE.    I HAVE DECIDED TO BE MUCH MORE LENIENT IN MY SCORING AND HAVE DONE AWAY WITH MANY OF THE RULES. .

Maybe the Olympics and the Superbowl inspired me to create a quiz based on a specific genre another try, this time SPORTS MOVIES. For this quiz, besides the two image clues, the third clue is that the movie MUST be rated as a "sports movie" or at least have a very important part of the movie to be a sport, although it could also be another genre as well.

None of the movies are TOO old (well, maybe one or two are, but if so it will have been a popular classic) and most, if not all of them appear on Best Sports Movies lists.  I have only seen 14 of these movies myself, so for most of them just identifying the clue images should give you a good idea what the movie is, but as always, some clues are of an item or scenario that is a primary object in or otherwise indicative of or important to the plot  and you may have to have seen the movie to identify it.  I've used as few of the movies that have been included in previous quizzes as I could, but even if so I tried not to use the same image clues, and as usual I don't think any of the image clues are actual screen shots from the movies.

I try to use clues that do not make it easy to do a web search, and since this is a test of your movie memory, web searching using web programs that identify movies from the clues is cheating, but once you think you know the answer I recommend that you check to make sure it is correct.  Participants keep losing points because they fail to do that.

THE RULES

I am being much more lenient and you will not lose score for not capitalizing or using proper punctuation or correct spelling or adding an extraneous or leaving off a "the" or "A", but I will have to make a decision between your just naming what the clues are and the actual movie name.  Just identifying the images does not necessarily mean that you know the name of the movie, which is why I recommend that you check to make sure the name is correct, because the images may only be a CLUE to the ACTUAL name of the movie.

Remakes of original movies with the same name will be acceptable.  If you name movies that I feel the clues identify as well or better than the ones I used, I have been accepting them as good answers as well.  TV programs and TV series such as West Wing are not answers, but I will accept TV movies like QB VII (which is an adaptation of a novel) or some miniseries if they are an adaptation of a novel that is too long for one showing and are spread out, like the BBC adaptation of Pride and Prejudice.

There are some hard ones to guess, and also some very easy ones, so give it a try and NAME THESE MOVIES.

Please number your answers the same as the images.

With both the Olympics and the upcoming Superbowl as inspiration, I have decided to create another movie quiz, this one being for sports movies.  You've all had a nice long rest from the last quiz so I hope that many of you will take a shot at this one.  So PLEASE read the introduction in order to be prepared to not make mistakes and to get a good score, but always remember...

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS OR MOVIE NAMES OR HINTS IN A COMMENT HERE, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE QUIZ FOR EVERYONE ELSE.  POST THEM IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.

BUZZ NOTE: I have changed number 4 to a different movie, as it was pointed out that my original clues were for a movie that was not a sports movie.

I see that this has already been pushed off the Home (Front) page, not that it matters so much other than to interest members who have not yet tried one of my quizzes.  I do send notices to those who have played before - you know, those who think there are better ways to have fun other than ranting about politics.  Only two have played so far and only one movie has not been identified so the quiz can't be that difficult. I thought Americans were much into sports, so I thought this quiz would have been more to their liking.  In fact, Americans' attitude towards sports was depicted in this story sent to me by my brother:

A friend of mine has two tickets for the 2022 Super Bowl in LA on February 13th, both box seats.

He paid $2500 each. It comes with a ride to and from the airport, lunch, dinner, $400.00 bar tab, and credentials to the winner's locker room.

He didn't realize last year when he won them in a silent auction it was going to be on the same day as his wedding.

If you are interested, he is looking for someone to take his place.

It's at St. Paul's Church in Orlando at 3pm. Her name is Ashley. She's 5'4", about 115lbs, and a good cook too. She also loves to fish and hunt.  She'll be the one in the white dress.

Three members have participated now, and each question has been correctly answered by one or another (although no perfect score as yet) so I am satisfied that every question is answerable, none are impossible.  This quiz will remain open through the weekend.

I had thought that Americans were really into sports, so there would be many participating in a quiz about sports movies, but I guess I was wrong since only four members have played so far.  This quiz will be closed Sunday evening (New York time) so anyone still pondering should submit their answers soon.

Well you've found my one weak spots, My initial run thru the list I named 15, the other five not a clue, and five of the ones I named were huge guesses...

Sports movies are generally movies that have to connect on a personal level, no connection, no remembrance... Certain sports movies have a great connection for me most do not...

I had the same experience and found little help in the top 100 or 150  sports movies.

(No hints, please.  Save it till I close the quiz).

WOW!!!  Another comment disappeared on me - I posted it about 10 hours ago and it's gone.  Well, here we go again.  This quiz is now closed, and here are the winners:  Veronica takes the gold with a score of 19 out of 20, Dig gets Silver with a score of 18, Snuffy won the bronze with a score of 17 1/2 and Honourable Mention goes to Charger who scored 16.  Congratulations to the winners and thanks to those who played.

The minimal participation on this quiz was a big disappointment - I thought Americans were really into sports in a big way.  Now I doubt that I should create any more quizzes based on a specific genre - for example, if sports isn't popular, sure as hell Film Noir won't be and I think I've already covered the most popular genres except comedy, and since I've been getting criticism about what's in a genre and what isn't already, and the problem with comedy is that damn near every movie seems to be considered a comedy - for example Forrest Gump is considered a comedy.  Maybe I should do political movies, but if I do I might get so many replies I won't have time to score them, since politics seems to be the only thing most of the NT members are interested in.  So I'll have to focus on quizzes about specific actors.  Here are the answers, in case anyone else is interested.

1.  Tin Cup - a tin cup & a golf ball
2.  The Bad News Bears - bad news headlines & teddy bears
3.  Dodgeball - a Dodge car & a red dodgeball
4.  Space Jam - scene of outer space & jar of strawberry jam
5.  Olympic Dreams - cross country skiing & person dreaming.  Evolution of Dreams is also a correct answer.
6.  Horse Feathers - a horse and feathers (old, but easy)
7.  Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable - woman surfing & shark attacking a woman.  Soul Surfer is also a correct answer.
8.  Rocky - a rocky path & Philadelphia Museum of Art with the "Rocky steps"
9.  Caddyshack - Cadillac car (commonly a/k/a a "Caddy") & a shack
10. Pumping Iron - a person pumping & a laundry iron
11. Cool Runnings - thermometer showing low temp & persons running
12. Eight Men Out - silhouette of 8 men & an exit sign
13. Against the Ropes - a woman where men usually are & ropes
14. Le Mans - racing cars racing & the French flag
15. ANY Robin Hood movie - Robin Hood cap & archery target
16. National Velvet - The British nation & velvet cloth
17. The Longest Yard - Infinity sign & a yardstick
18. The Hurricane - a hurricane seen from space & boxing gloves
19. Major League - Cleveland's baseball stadium & a pitcher wearing glasses
20. Break Point - a hammer breaking glass & a woman pointing

Well looking at the list, I would have got the 15 I did name, (even though five of them were guesses) and of the remaining five my thinking would have provided another two at least...

Congrats to the winners...

Buzz, I had " The Shallows " 2016 as the woman surfer/shark attack movie... three movies fit the clues perfectly....

I've watched The Shallows here, and in that movie the shark did not have success against the female protagonist as it did in the Bethany Hamilton movies, but I may have accepted it as being close enough. I had originally thought of using a picture of a woman with one arm as the second clue but I thought that would make it much too easy.

Some of my favorite movies are sports movies, a few that you had in your list. A League of their Own always brings a tear to my eye and the funniest sports movie of all is Major League next to Burt Reynold's Longest Yard
