The Outfit
I am not a tailor. I'm a cutter.

MOVIES & TV - CLASSIC to CURRENT

I saw this movie over the weekend, it was free to me on Peacock. It is set in 1950's Chicago when the Chicago Outfit was enjoying it's heyday. Even without ever being in Chicago, I got the feeling of Taylor Street before the UIC campus devoured it. It doesn't take long to figure out that this is a modern version of what they used to call a melodrama. The reason I say modern is because intrigue is overdone in this movie. Too many twists and turns, though I'm sure people will like the way the main character "Leonard" seems to always come up with the most convincing lies when needed. The final scene didn't really fit and was unnecessary IMO.

The acting is well done. It was entertaining, though it's not the kind of movie I'd see again.

One big issue I had was the title. The story has little to do with the Chicago Outfit. Don't you like when they use a specific title for a non-related work of fiction? I suppose it holds a double meaning as the main character happens to be a tailor. It's like making a movie about a Russian farmer during WWII and calling it Joseph Stalin.

The preview made it appear to be a fairly exciting movie, but the storyline is a little confusing.

Did you know there were 3 or 4 movies called The Outfit.  I just watched a 1993 one that depicted Lucky Luciano, Legs Diamond and Dutch Schultz.

That again would be a misnomer. All of those mentioned were part of New York's organized crime. The outfit refers to the Chicago organization which grew out of Al Capone's gang. The only movie that really relates to the outfit was "Casino" which marked the outfit's demise.

Yes, I understand that it means the Chicago mob, but the words have other meanings, such as:  "3. informal any group or association regarded as a cohesive unit, such as a military company, business house, etc."

And in the case of the Chicago mob, it also conveyed the meaning of an equal opportunity employer.
