MOVIE QUIZ - GARY COOPER FILMS
MOVIE QUIZ - GARY COOPER FILMS
PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A COMMENT, HINT AT OR POST MOVIE NAMES OR QUOTES OR YOU WILL RUIN THE QUIZ FOR EVERYONE ELSE. POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, 'BUZZ of the ORIENT', AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.
Don't forget that I'm on the other side of the world (of most of you) and I could be asleep when you send your answers, so be patient - I will get to your PN as soon as I can .
PLEASE, PLEASE, READ WHAT IS BELOW IN ORDER TO GET A BETTER SCORE. IT IS ALWAYS SOMEWHAT DIFFERENT FROM PREVIOUS INTRODUCTIONS.
For this quiz, besides the two image clues, the third clue, and requirement , is that the movie MUST be one in which Gary Cooper acted, and it could be any genre. He acted in 115 movies, released between 1923 and 1961, quite a few before even I was born. So although a lot of his movies may be older than us, at least many were popular with a good chance that you've seen them. I have seen only 8 of the ones in the quiz myself (some many decades ago), so for most of them the clues indicate the title of the movie, but for some of them the clues could be of an item or scenario that is a primary object in or otherwise indicative of or important to the plot which might make the quiz a little more difficult if you've not seen the movie or at least read the synopsis.
The movies I chose were from the 92 movies on the RANKER list of Gary Cooper Movies List: Best to Worst and the link to that list is ->
https://www.ranker.com/list/gary-cooper-movies-and-films-and-filmography/ranker-film
I suggest that you go through that list in order to help you answer the questions.
Some of the movies were included in previous quizzes, but even if so I tried not to use the same image clues, and as usual I don't think any of the image clues are actual screen shots from the movies. I try to use clues that do not make it easy to do a web search, and since this is a test of your movie memory and identification skills, web searching using web programs that identify movies from naming the clues is cheating, but once you think you know the answer I recommend that you check to make sure it is correct. Participants keep losing points because they fail to do that, and in fact on the Bogart quiz 3 participants did not check the names and DID lose points.
Two hints, for all my quizzes. I never put the same movie twice on the same quiz, and the order in which I post clues for each question is usually significant.
THE RULES
You will not lose score for not capitalizing or using proper punctuation or correct spelling or adding an extraneous or leaving off a "the" or "A", but I will have to make a decision between your just naming what the clues are and the actual movie name. Just identifying the images does not necessarily mean that you know the name of the movie, which is why I recommend that you check to make sure the name is correct, because the images may only be a clue to the ACTUAL name of the movie.
Remakes of original movies with the same name will be acceptable (provided that Gary Cooper is an actor in the remake). If you name movies that I feel the clues identify as well or better than the ones I used, I have been accepting them as good answers as well, but keep in mind that Gary Cooper must be an actor in the movie.
If you're not sure, don't leave a blank but guess - you could be right and you don’t lose score if you’re wrong. There are both hard ones to guess, and also easy ones, so give it a try and NAME THESE MOVIES.

Since damn near every time I post a quiz somebody is going to post a comment containing a hint like a quote, a movie name even if it isn't one on the quiz, and I have to delete it, so I'll post this YET AGAIN.
Apparently the Bogart quiz was enjoyed by the participants so I decided to do another by a popular actor of that era. I believe that some of the movies on this quiz would be considered fairly well known classics, but there are also some that I had never heard of before. Let's see how you do on this quiz, but please read through the full introduction above, and as always....

There is no sense leaving the quiz open for a long time so I will close this quiz on Monday evening (NYC time) and hope I get the hours and days right this time.
Hi, Buzz - The Ranker link doesn't work ... at least for me ...
IMDB lists 117 credited movies. Perhaps we could use this one instead?
Sorry, I should have tested it, I have now reposted it so try it now and tell me if it's still not working and I will put a link to a different source, but any list of all his movies on the web is okay.
I was able to use your Ranker re-post to double-check my answers. Thanks!
Yeah, the replaced link works okay.
And submitted...
Received and scored - thank you.

Only 4 participants so far, but each of the 20 questions has been answered by someone or other among them so none of the questions are impossible to answer.
Need more votes up and comments to stay on the Home (Front) Page.
Maybe this quiz is so easy hardly anyone wants to bother with it. Should I make the next quiz harder, and a less well-known actor?
I don't know about making it harder, but the subject is the personification of the average American.
Do you think I should use a foreign actor - someone like Alec Guiness or Laurence Olivier? Is that what you mean?
I happen to like true American icons.
One more thing: There is an actor who had international prestige. He may be the most fascinating actor who ever lived. The man who got tired of acting: Marlon Brando.
I read somewhere that when the movie Sayonara premiered in Japan, Brando was swamped by throngs of Japanese people seeking autographs. There was one who spoke English but evidently didn't know who he was. She asked him "what do you do?" Brando replied "I make faces."
Interesting that you mentioned him. Right now, I'm watching him in Guys and Dolls (1955). He and Jean Simmons sang their songs.
Although Brando is a great idea, especially because of the variety of his roles, he made only 39 movies and if I didn't combine him with another actor it would make the quiz much too easy. Problem is, one participant has already told me that when I combine two actors is gets too confusing. I wonder how others feel about that.
That was the role he didn't think he could do. In truth he could play any role. Movie goers worldwide were fascinated by him.
2 actors is not too hard if you can get a good pair, try a male and female again
For me, this one was more difficult than the Bogart one. I'd seen only 9 of the Cooper movies.
That was one more than I had seen.
Working on it

Not much time left. Closing in about 20 hours, i.e. Monday evening NYC time.
Bumping back to the front page. As Buzz will be closing the quiz this evening (Monday evening NYC time), here's one last notification to get your answers in.
Thanks Snuffy. The quiz will be closed, the winners announced, and the answers posted in about 2 hours from now. Last call in case anyone is straggling.
This quiz is now closed. Only 6 members participated, but all of them are in the winner's circle. The top winner is Snuffy with a perfect score of 20 out of 20. Charger was behind by only a sliver, having achieved second place with a score of 19 1/2. Tied for third place are Jasper, Vic Eldred and Split Personality, all missing only one answer (although different for each) - each getting scores of 19 out of 20. Honourable Mention goes to GregTx with a score of 17. My thanks to all of you for participating.
I'm not sure if my next quiz will be genre-based, such as murder mysteries, or one actor's films, or a combo of two, but I'll start working on it. Thankfully, for a change, nobody posted a hint or a quote or a movie name here as a comment this time. For those who think these quizzes are too hard or boring for them because they have difficulty thinking about anything else but politics and don't want to have fun (pretty well every one who tries the quiz tells me they had fun doing it), take a look at the questions above and the answers now posted below and see what you could have done. Here are the answers:
1. A Farewell to Arms - WW1 army ambulance & a WW1 nurse
2. Ball of Fire - a fiery ball & an encyclopedia
3. Devil and the Deep - a devil & a submarine under water
4. High Noon - a cowboy's wedding & a U.S. Marshall badge
5. North West Mounted Police - a Texas image & a Canadian Mounted Policeman

9. The Adventures of Marco Polo - Venice (his birthplace) & The Forbidden City
10. Lilac Time - lilacs & TIME magazine
11. Love in the Afternoon - girl playing the cello & a carnation
12. Friendly Persuasion - Quaker oats & the civil war
13. The Hanging Tree - a person hanging on & a tree with a noose hanging1.
14. Wolf Song - a wolf & a music image
15. Mr. Deeds Goes to Town - he played the tuba & lots of money
16. Task Force - an American aircraft carrier & the Pearl Harbour invasion.
17. The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell - a military court martial & American WW2 fighter planes

19. Sergeant York - WW1 soldiers shooting practice & the Bronx Express
20. Beau Geste - a sapphire & French Foreign Legion soldiers
If anyone is curious about the clues I used, and why, I will be happy to explain my reasons.
Thanks Buzz, it was a fun quiz.
And Congratulations everybody.. some good scores, well done all.
There are 4 or 5 movies on this list that I have never even heard of, so it would be impossible for me to "win" unless I looked up the title of every one of Gary Coopers movies and matched the names to the clues.
As Buzz put in right at the top...
He's been providing the list of movies for the past several quiz's now so you can get the list of the movies in question. He even suggests that you use his list to help answer. Some of the hints may require that you have seen the movie as a hint may be something that was seen in that movie, but other hints are direct hints to the name of the movie. Come on JR, take a time out from politics and work thru the next quiz. Who knows, you may even have fun...
I haven't participated in many of the past quizzes, but I find it very helpful that Buzz includes Ranker and IMDB lists. Why anyone would post negative comments about an apolitical, benign topic is beyond my comprehension. I, for one, am looking forward to his next quiz!
Thank you Jasper. Although I do post political articles from time to time I try my best to swing readers' attention from them with other topics that I post, such as movie articles, my photography postings, feel good articles, even book articles, etc. I'm going to post a damning political article today about abortion.
Unfortunately too few NT members want to discover that.
And it's a shame. These are a nice break from the normal "I'm right and you suck for supporting that political party" crap that infects this board.
Good luck with the next quiz, looking forward to it.
Ah, that comment in which I quoted you was meant to be a reply to you, but when a comment is the last one on the column I sometimes forget to click "reply".
I did the quizzes for a while, but got a little tired of it. Plus you got too picky about the rules.
I may come back at some point though.
No longer picky - I'm quite lenient with the rules now. Read what I said in the quiz introduction above. As well, you just made me laugh by saying I was too picky. Go back and read YOUR constant criticisms of every quiz.
But I don't hold grudges. If you want, I'll put you back on my notifications list so you won't miss the next quiz.
