Under harsh trainings, they rise to fame during their adolescence, after Dieyi painstakingly yields to accept the female identity established for him by the opera. Once, the troupe is invited to perform for the retired yet wealthy eunuch Zhang at his luxury residence. Zhang is so captivated by Dieyi's performance in the  Farewell My Concubine (Guifei zuijiu)  that he asks to meet him alone after the play. Zhang disregards the troupe master's appeal to ask Xiaolou to accompany him. In a long and ascending corridor near the backstage of the theater, a servant of Zhang dresses Dieyi with a cloak and rudely carries him away. Xiaolou, still in his opera costume, fails to join them. Wulong Karst Tourism Area &  Curse of the Golden Flower

Wulong Karst Tourism Area, located in Chongqing’s Wulong district, has unique karst landscapes including caves, sinkholes, fractures, canyons, peaks, and alpine meadows. It is divided into three sections: the Three Natural Bridges, the Fairy Mountain, and the Furong Cave. Designated a national top level travel destination, the tourism area also impresses visitors with distinctive folk customs of the Tujia, Miao, and Mulam ethnic groups.

The Three Natural Bridges in Wulong is a rare geological wonder of typical karst landforms and is home to three magnificent natural limestone arch bridges, namely the Tianlong Bridge, the Qinglong Bridge, and the Heilong Bridge. The height, width, and span of the three bridges are over 150 meters, 200 meters, and 300 meters respectively. They span the Yangshuihe Canyon in parallel and connect the mountains on both sides, forming an eccentric landscape of “three bridges sandwiched by two pits”.

Westerners could be familiar with two of the films - Farewell My Concubine and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon.  The latter is one of my favourite movies.

Those are exotic locations. My first impressions of China came from another movie made way back in 1966. That Movie was called "The Sand Pebbles" and it was about an American gunboat patrolling China's Yangtze River in the 1920's. The movie was actually filmed in Taiwan and the great port of Honk Kong.

In reality (not movies) there are a group of Marines called ''China Marines'' who were stationed in Shanghai from the late 1920s to 1941.

I live not far from the Yangtze River, it runs through Chongqing.  However, the only rivers I've been on boats on in China are the Yellow River when I was living farther north, in Zhengzhou, the Li River that cruised through the Karst mountains in Guanxi Province, and the Jialing River which is closer to where I live, and which flows into the Yangtze River.  Never saw any gunboats.  LOL

No more gunboats. China controls all it's ports and all it's trade these days.

Much of a 1937 Hollywood movie, The Good Earth, was filmed in China as well, but the locations were not so beautiful.  As well, the top roles were Caucasians made up as Chinese (Paul Muni and Luise Rainer), which was a blow to Anna May Wong who now appears on the new American quarter.
