(NEXSTAR) — Actor and filmmaker Sean Penn is calling for a boycott – and even threatening to smelt his own awards – of Sunday’s Academy Awards if Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy isn’t given the opportunity to speak during the show.

“There is nothing greater the Academy Awards could do than to give [Zelenskyy] that opportunity to talk to all of us,” Penn, speaking from Poland, said during an interview with  CNN . The 61-year-old has been in Ukraine filming a documentary on Russia’s invasion.

Penn continued, saying it is his understanding that the Academy had decided against having Zelenskyy speak.

“If it turns out to be what’s happening, I would encourage everyone involved to know that though it may be their moment … to celebrate their films, it is so much more importantly their moment to shine and to protest and to boycott that Academy Awards,” he added. “And I myself, if it comes back to it, when I return, I will smelt [my awards] in public.”

Cast in bronze and finished with gold plating, the Oscar statuette is among the most coveted awards in the film industry. Penn, a five-time nominee, has won two, both for best actor, in 2003 for “Mystic River” and in 2008 for “Milk.”

The Academy did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

In my opinion, Sean Penn has a lot of chutzpah trying to coerce the Academy into promoting his cause.  If they were to do so they would be forced to agree with being blackmailed by anyone seeking to promote their causes.  They should tell him to shove his Oscars up his ass.

They should tell him to shove his Oscars up his ass.

They’ve probably already been there.

For once we agree.

Sean Penn, like every other actor, director, or producer, needs to stick to what they know; and keep their politics to themselves.

He can make a movie about smelting his Oscars.

Sean Penn has never not been a lunatic.

By the way, Dummy (Sean), smelting is when you extract a metal from the ore (i.e. the natural rock). You wouldn’t be doing that. You’d be melting your trophies. And as far as that goes, knock yourself out. No one, anywhere, will shed a tear for your Oscars or your AYSO trophies. Have at it, asshole.

The problem with entitled Hollywood elitists is that they think their opinion matters to most of us.

Who really gives a shit about what he does with his Oscar?

I think the ratings for most of these award shows reveal that them going political isn't resonating with viewers.
