Top Gun: Maverick Named Best Film of 2022 by National Board of Review
Top Gun: Maverick is soaring to new heights and end-of-year accolades.
On Thursday, the National Board of Review announced that it has named the Tom Cruise-led movie as its top film of 2022, adding to the sequel’s pile of accomplishments as the highest-grossing film of 2022 and one of the most successful films of all time.
The Joseph Kosinski-directed movie, a sequel to 60-year-old Cruise’s 1986 original Top Gun , also won an award for outstanding achievement in cinematography, which went to director of photography Claudio Miranda.
“ Top Gun: Maverick is a thrilling crowd-pleaser that is expertly crafted on every level,” NBR president Annie Schulhof said in a statement obtained by PEOPLE Thursday.
“Tom Cruise, Joseph Kosinski, and the entire filmmaking team have succeeded in making an incredibly popular film that brought audiences back to theaters, while at the same time being a full-on cinematic achievement,” Schulhof added.

I'm a little surprised. I'm actually a big Tom Cruise fan (he's the best action movie star ever), but I dont think I would name Top Gun Maverick the best movie of the year unless the competition is very weak (which may be the case this year).
Maverick is exciting at times, and the photography and technical aspects are the best, but the story is a little mundane and very predictable. But maybe the comfort level is why people like it so much.
Tom Cruise is the biggest movie star we have, and maybe its time his movies win some awards.
I would have to agree with your assessment, John. I enjoyed the movie, but it was hardly the movie of the year. There has just been such a shortage of good movies. I used to go to the movies at least twice a month and Top Gun was the last movie I saw. Pretty sad pickings.
The National Board Of Review used to be a pretty prestigious award. I assume it still is but I'm not sure.
Top Gun Maverick is like a summation of Tom Cruise's popularity and onscreen persona. He is handsome, cocky, likeable, a rebel , and heroic. There is a great deal of audience appeal there. And the photography, even in the non aerial scenes, is pristine.
But I doubt if it is the best movie of the year because the story just isnt that compelling.
Top gun maverick is just a rip-off of Star Wars a new hope.
I think you are somewhat on the right track, especially with the final scenes where they attack the reactor.
And the Hero and his rear are saved by the “Rogue” fighter.
I saw it, then quickly forgot the plot and everything about it. I sure hope that’s not the best movie of the year.
Didn't Avatar: The Way of Water have its premier already, and I assue it will be shown in many theatres before the end of this year? From the Avatar article also on this NT Home (Front) page one might think it might have been a better choice.
Never let a Navy vet who was in the aviation community watch a movie like Top Gun. They will routinely sit and pick out all the glaring errors in the film that never happen in real life. My late wife used to get highly upset at me for doing that. I still enjoyed the first one and will watch Maverick on Paramount Plus on the 22nd of December.
