CLASSIC MOVIES GAME

 800

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS, ANY MOVIE OR ACTOR NAMES, IMAGES, MOVIE QUOTES OR EVEN A HINT IN A COMMENT, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE GAME FOR EVERYONE ELSE.      POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.

Don't forget that I am on the other side of the world (of most of you) and I could be asleep when you send your answers, so be patient - I will get to your PN as soon as I can.

PLEASE, PLEASE,  READ WHAT IS BELOW FIRST AND FOLLOW THE RULES IN ORDER TO GET FULL MARKS FOR YOUR ANSWERS.  THIS GAME IS SIMILAR TO THE PREVIOUS GAME, BUT WITH A COUPLE OF KICKERS.

For the answer to be correct, it is  REQUIRED  that it  MUST  be a movie on the linked IMDb movie list  100 classic movies that everyone should see (which actually lists 101 titles) located just below this paragraph. The visual clues represent a word(s}, scenario or image that may be relevant to the movie title or word(s) relevant to the movie title that can be found in the mini-synopsis of the movie on the linked IMDb list or in this case there are as many as a few questions where the clue is one you might have to relate to a title through your own memory, common knowledge or common sense. That means that for most questions you will not have had to see the movies or even know the stories to identify the movies from the clues, which is why this is a game more like a treasure hunt than a quiz.  I have seen most of the movies on this game, and I’ve probably used many of them in previous quizzes or games, wherein I might have used the same or similar clues for some as I had before.  I don't think any of the clues are actual screen shots from the movies.  I try to use clues that do not make it easy to do a web search, and since this is a test of your ability to find the answers, web searching using google or web programs that identify movies from the clues is cheating.  The real fun of the game is using the visual clues and mini-synopses required to identify the movies, so IMO if you cheat you are the biggest loser even if you're able to fool the rest of us.

100 classic movies that everyone should see (IMDb)

LINK -> 100 classic movies that everyone should see. (imdb.com)

There may be lists with the same or similar names but with different movies, so   IT IS NECESSARY   to use   ONLY   the one that is linked above.

Note that I (almost) never use the same movie more than once in the same game.  I said "almost" because I mistakenly actually   DID   use the same movie twice in the Pirate Movie Game, but caught it and replaced it when I got the first submission.

THE RULES

I am being fairly lenient in my scoring, and not overly concerned about spelling mistakes, obvious typos, punctuation, capitalizing or leaving out or adding an extraneous "A" or "The", but especially if you guess the answer  you should check the movie name on the linked lists or web to make sure it is the full and correct name.   For example, and this will be important for all my games, you will lose a half mark if you make the title one word if it is two, or two words when it is only one because that means to me that you are not sure of the title and you never checked your answer with the list to make sure it is correct.  Just identifying the image does not necessarily mean that you know the name of the movie.  That is only one of the reasons why  it is important for you to check your answers with the lists to make sure they are correct.   I can't believe how many times players do not bother and then lose score.  As well, if you can convince me that my clues are equally as relevant for or better indicative of a movie other than the one I've chosen,  provided it is one of the movies on the IMDb lists linked above,  I will accept that alternative as a good answer. Previously I did accept alternative movies for the questions.

Please also send only one answer for each question - I cannot score it if you provide more than one movie name per question.

A few who played the games when they were quizzes previously had quit because of the rules. But I wish to ask if there is a game that does  NOT  have rules that must be followed?

A few times now a situation came up previously where the movie list link I used came up with a different name than the one the participant got when they opened that same movie name although it was the same link, so if that happens, and usually it is a foreign movie, please tell me when I score your answers

Please number your answers the same as the questions.

I don’t intend to disappoint those who enjoy the fun of my movie games, so here we go again, starting early and giving you the weekend and then the rest of the week to play this one.   As usual there are quite a few clues that shout out the answer to you but on the other hand a few of the clues might not represent a word in the title or min-synopsis, and you may have to have seen the movie, or else use common knowledge or just plain old common sense to come up with the answer.  So good luck, let’s play, but don’t forget....

PLEASE DO NOT POST YOUR ANSWERS, ANY MOVIE OR ACTOR NAMES, IMAGES, MOVIE QUOTES OR EVEN A HINT IN A COMMENT  HERE, OR YOU WILL RUIN THE GAME FOR EVERYONE ELSE.   POST YOUR ANSWERS IN A PRIVATE NOTE TO ME, BUZZ OF THE ORIENT, AND I WILL REPLY WITH YOUR SCORE AND THE CORRECT ANSWERS.

This game will be open for a week and will be closed on Friday August 9th at about 10 p.m. New York time.  I don't expect this game to remain on the Front (Home) Page for very long.  At this time 25 out of 30 of the articles are on political matters and one is on the Olympics.  With so few wanting to have the fun distraction of a game like this, the game will soon be wiped off the Front (Home) Page.

Then perhaps you should not run for president?

(You seem very clear thinking to me, but lately their seems to be a prejudice against older people.)

Actually, I should not run at all.

Where I'm living it is customary, traditional or whatever you want to call it, that there is the highest respect for the elderly.

Actually I've noticed that.

In America there's been what I consider to be "a cult of youthfulness".

But over the years I've known, or met, a fair number of Chinese-Americans. Their respect for the elderly is amazing.

Once I was going into a store. My age was late fifties. And I was working out regularly and was in great. Carrying no packages. I reached out to open the door to the store-- and a Chinese kid made great effort to get to the door handle and hold it open for me!.

Its a strongly embedded cultural thing (& I think I know why).

I have experienced several other examples of their cultural respect for the elderly.

Hi, I just realized I never explained why.

My realization came in a discussion with friends. One asked what ethnic group had the most common with Jews. She said it was the Chinese!

I won't bore you with all the details, but one thing she claimed was that both groups are very aware of things from their distant past-- and they've been around a long, long time.

With the Jews, why do they still do certain things? Well, sometimes they can't give you a reason but its due to "tradition!" (Cue music from "Fiddler On the Roof"!

And the Chinese have a reverence for the elderly..

Since both these groups have a long, long history, there are many things that were learned over millenia...

With the Chinese the elderly are important-- because they pass down the ancient wisdom. And with the Jews the ancient wisdom is passed down by..."traditions"!

My guess is that many groups of indigenous peoples, whose culture has survived for centuries also have similar practices.

P.S: this is just I theory I have-- I could be wrong! jrSmiley_9_smiley_image.gif

"Tell us please."

Although you have, there is more.  In China it is not at all unusual for generations to live together in the same home.  While we were in Chengdu and now in Chongqing my wife's mother lived with us until she passed away.  We have 3 bedrooms and my wife's niece lives with us now, and she is like a daughter - she is the biggest help in so many ways we would not want to be here without her.  Her parents live on and take care of the family farm in a rural area of Chongqing quite far away, and she is an independent employment agent.  Grandparents look after the children who are too young to be at school.  There are so many benefits, everyone contributes, and everyone has the greatest respect for the privacy of others.

As well, both Jews and the Chinese have the highest respect for teachers, and education is of the utmost importance.  It may interest you that I do not believe there is such a thing as antisemitism in China.

Historically, Jews were welcomed in China 1000 years ago   You can read about the Jews of Kaifeng on Google or Microsoft Bing, when they came along the Silk Road as traders.  In fact Jews are highly respected for their acumen in business.  Many texts are published about the benefit of being like a Jewish businessman in order to be successful.

I've noticed that.

Years ago there were quota systems against admitting too many Jews in the most prestigious universities. (Because their culture respected learning so much they normally were better educated than others seeking admission.& without discriminatory practices they'd be admitted in greater numbers than others) For example if there were standardized tests used in admissions, Jews had to have a higher score than other groups.

In recent years that's changed a bit-- the group that's discriminated against the most are Chinese-Americans! (Also Korean-Americans).

I've also heard stories of some Chinese kids changing their last names on admissions forms-- changing a Chinese sounding name to one that wasn't in hopes of overcoming discrimination vs. Chinese kids.

Actually I've heard that before. Also, BTW, I have Indian friends that say the same about India.

What do China and India have in common? They are both ancient cultures, so it may be that over the centuries different groups have learned to accept other groups' differences ...?

And because Indian civilization is so ancient, Hinduism has split into many branches, denominations  and sects (possibly more than any other religion?) so over time they've had to learn to accept other peoples' differences?

Again, thanks for a fun game. Hope more people play this time. This list is a listing of really good movies, of course there are some that I would not agree should be on this list but everybody is different.

As Yogi Berra once said, it's never over 'til it's over, and this game is now over.  Only five were able to provide their answers, and all five have made it to the Winners' Circle.  Dig and Snuffy share first place with perfect 20 scores.  charger 383 missed first place by only a half mark, achieving 19 1/2 for second place.  bccrane takes third place with a score of 19 and Perrie earned Honourable Mention with a score of 18.  Congratulations and thanks to all for taking a little bit of their time to have some fun.

Here are the answers with the clue descriptions, just in case some chicken gamers can see how easy it is to have a little fun instead of fighting over politics.

  1.          Monty Python and the Holy Grail – a round table
  2.          The Wizard of Oz – a tornado
  3.          Casablanca – a black piano player
  4.          The Adventures of Robin Hood – a robin
  5.          Straw Dogs – straws
  6.          Deliverance - canoeing on a river
  7.          Midnight Express – a turkey
  8.          Night of the Living Dead – an old farm house
  9.          Psycho – a California Motel
  10.          A Hard Day’s Night – beetles
  11.          Enter the Dragon – martial arts at Shaolin Temple
  12.          Dracula – a coffin
  13.          Woodstock – Jimi Hendrix
  14.          Close Encounters of the Third Kind – a flying saucer.                                 The Day the Earth Stood Still is okay too.
  15.          Rosemary’s Baby – a mother with baby in a cradle
  16.          Dog Day Afternoon – 3 bank robbers
  17.          Carrie – high school senior prom
  18.          Tarzan the Ape Man – elephants
  19.          It’s a Wonderful Life – a male angel
  20.          Inherit the Wind – evolution image

Be seeing you all down the road sometime.  In the meantime enjoy your political war.  It's not the kind of thing I enjoy, but then I'm not an American.
