Movie Review: Sisu

Sisu is a 2023 movie from Finish writer & director Jalmari Helander. The movie was shot as far north as they could travel past the treeline. The rocky landscape is beautifully shot and almost a character as are the actors. The movie stars Jorma Tommila as an ex Finish WW2 soldier, Aatami, now a prospector looking for gold. As he's taking his newly found gold to the city he crosses paths with a company of Nazis leaving Finland to Norway. It really doesn't go well for anyone.
The official tagline for the movie is, "When an ex-soldier who discovers gold in the Lapland wilderness tries to take the loot into the city, German soldiers led by a brutal SS officer battle him."
Sisu is difficult to translate from Finnish to English. It roughly translates to an implacable determination never to give up. As a fan of action movies I have to say this one is one of the better ones. It's violent and brutal, but they never cross the line into gratuity. I particularly like the subplot of the women the Nazi's had taken captive. Helander talked to as many WW2 veterans as he could when he wrote it. It's well acted, well directed and the cinematography is fantastic.
The movie was mostly filmed in English. I picked this up on 4k bluray, but is also available online at Starz, Prime Video ($3.99) and YouTube TV.

A fantastic WW2 action movie. Less WW2 and more action though. It has elements of old western movies too.
featuring awesome gratuitous violence ...
I really like watching fascists being terminated in the most horrific ways ...
Someday we should do a listicle of movies...
there's just something about seeing or hearing an explosion and then watching an arm or leg land in the shot ...
Then you will really like Chapter 3: The Minefield
I did like it. now you see them, >ka-boom<, now you don't ...
almost as much fun as seeing a head shot ...
I thought the age test before allowing viewing of the previews on IMDb was an interesting addition I've never seen before, but I guess it was considered necessary because of the word M.....F..... and that unbelievable shot of the knife thrust through the head (talk about explicit!!!).
It does set a tone.
