A diamond in the rough
It has been a busy cold week. I really got up late on a peaceful Saturday and began fooling around with YouTube. There I found a diamond in the rough. We all know that although YouTube charges us for the movies that are kind of in demand, they still have a wide range of movies that are interesting and free. Sometimes they are contributed by people and in not very good condition.
Today I found one in excellent quality and if you don't mind subtitles, it was IMO very interesting. It was made in Germany in 2003 and it delt with some cultural & historical topics, while at the same time being fairly entertaining. I don't suppose anyone outside of Germany realizes the significance of the mid 50's in the way the Germans did. Around that time the Germans had an incredible soccer team that would meet a Championship Hungarian team that hadn't lost a game in over 4 years. In 1955 West German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, who was part of Germany getting into NATO accepted an invitation from the new Soviet Russian leader Nikita Khrushchev (always fearful of the Germans) to a meeting. Adenauer demanded and got the release of the German POWs the Soviet Union still held a decade after the war had ended. The final 15,000 German civilians and prisoners of war were released. That meant about 1 million had died in Soviet captivity. That is one of the subplots to the movie. (The setting is Germany in the mid 50s.)
I think the movie provides a fresh perspective on life. It kind of has a Hollywood ending. It may not be suitable to the taste of some, but speaking of taste, it goes good with Rum & Coke. The English title is "The miracle of Bern."

Although I may never get to see that movie I appreciate your telling us about it. Unfortunately IMDb does not have a preview/trailer for it.
