Meticulous workmanship knits together artistry and imperial beauty

For over three decades, married couple Ji Yu and Li Dongyang have been committed to a craftsmanship that demands enormous patience, dexterity and perseverance — restoring vintage handmade carpets.
Some of these vivid, intricate woven pieces, dating back centuries, once adorned the living spaces of imperial clans and members of aristocracy. Today, they are in the collections of museums, institutions and private residences at home and abroad.
Not only has the couple restored the carpets to their near-original glory, but they have also invented better preservation methods and, during the process, discovered long-forgotten knitting techniques.
The Aimer Art Gallery in Beijing pays tribute to the couple's dedication in carrying on these techniques and traditions in an exhibition running until Feb 20.
On display are the carpets they have meticulously restored, showing fine examples of the time-honored heritage of palace carpets, deemed one of Beijing's Eight Imperial Handicrafts, or yanjing bajue .
Others on display are replicas in which the two artisans integrate techniques and artistic features of the East and West.

Back in Canada we had some fine carpets, but here,,..none, tile floors may not be so beautiful or luxurious, but they are a lot easier to keep clean.
I love Persian rugs. Have an inexpensive one on my livingroom floor. Saw one I loved in a Persian carpet store but it was $10,000! (Exquisite...)
A Persian rug is a luxury I would not be able to afford, but it is also something I don't really need.
