To Celebrate Literacy Week Florida School Installs Book Vending Machine

An elementary school in Florida had the novel idea to install a new vending machine that would be fully loaded with books instead of sugar-filled snacks. A teacher at the school got the idea from social media and thought it would be a perfect way to encourage kids to read.
The teacher worked with a friend to convert an old vending machine into one that dispenses books. It was unveiled during the school's Literacy Week , which started on Monday (January 28). Students can buy a book for just 50 cents.
Another Florida elementary school had the same idea, but instead of students purchasing books with their own money, they can redeem Bulldog Bucks, which they earn for doing well in class.
“Students earn Bulldog Bucks for making good choices,” Umatilla Elementary School Principal K. Dianne Dwyer told the Daily Commerical . “It could be for anything from a random act of kindness to reaching academic goals. Any student who has earned enough Bulldog Bucks and would like to buy a book can visit the machine with our media specialist, Mrs. Caldwell . She will exchange their Bulldog Bucks for vending coins and she will take them to the machine to pick out their book.”

The lettering on the vending machine is a bit difficult to read. It says "Feed Your Brain". A different article on the subject indicated that the kids were pumping their quarters into the machine, which is really gratifying news.
