I found this movie to be interesting in several ways. It contains action, the gore some seem to relish and it kind of has a moral message, which I am sure will be lost on the young. Jake Gyllenhaul is superb as the (arguably evil) freelance cameraman, who seeks to profit off of filming various crime scenes in the competitive world of free lance journalism. The setting is LA and the audience is aboard for Lou Bloom's (Gyllenhaul) hot pursuits of crime scenes. He starts out with a police radio and a film camera and races even the police to the scene of the crime.

The climax is when he crosses the line from filming scenes to arranging a police confrontation with two thugs who were responsible for murdering a family, apparently during a drug deal. He gets away with everything, becomes a success and the movie almost seems to glorify this overly ambitious, calculating man with without morals.

One of the sub plots was the relationship Bloom had with Nina (Rene Russo) who runs the newsroom at a local station. Her philosophy was to show graphic scenes of violence, murder & mayhem in the more affluent suburban area's of LA. The idea being that frightened citizens would tune in. Lou likes the idea and runs with it.

Early in the movie we find Lou and Nina negotiating over price. Lou is greedy, but he wants more than money from Nina. He is attracted to Nina who is quite a bit older than he is. He convinces her to go out to dinner with him. He tells her of his interest and she rejects the idea. He reminds her that he knows she hasn't managed to hang onto a job at any one news station for more than two years and his reporting could keep her afloat this time. She still brushes him off. Later when she desperately needs it he lands the "Coup De Gras" with an amazing film. He tells her exactly how much he wants, demands on air recognition for his new company and the physical relationship he wanted. She is left speechless and then agrees. In one of the final scenes (one of the most sensual Iv'e ever seen in a movie) she is totally subservient to him, thanking him for what he has given her.
