All Female Battalion’s Battle-cry ‘They Rape Us. We Kill Them!’
Thousands of Yazidi females, from toddlers to middle aged, have been auctioned off as sex slaves since ISIS stormed their villages in the northern Iraqi province of Sinjar.Several have managed to escape and recount un-fathomable cruelty and sexual abuse at the hands of the most barbaric group of militants in ages.Inspired to NOT accept such inhumane abuses lying down, a growing group of Yazidi women has formed under the leadership of a famous Yazidi singer, Xeta Shingali.Shingali has formed the Sun Girls battalion to fight back against those ISIS thugs who have abducted, raped and murdered literally thousands of their people.The youngest recruit, just 17 years of age, remains fearless at the prospect of facing the same fate as her Yazidi sisters. Even if they kill me, I will say I am a Yazidi, she says.The group now numbers 123 recruits between the ages of 17 and 30. They are trained to use AK47s by male Kurdish fighters.One young recruit said her family is proud of her for joining the brigade, saying, My father was so happy when I had told him I had joined this union.All families accept us to join this union We are happy to fight along side the peshmerga.Another hopes to join her father who is fighting on the front lines with Kurdish forces. She added, My sister wants to fight, but she is too young, 15 year old, but my father is a peshmerga and he is fighting ISIS in Shingal.Many recall horror stories of relatives and friends who were captured and abused by ISIS. Some seek revenge for fathers, brothers, and other relatives who have been enslaved or murdered by ISIS.yazcapThe prospect of being captured is dismissed, Before I was scared, now I cannot be scared of them. Any second they tell us to fight ISIS I am ready I hope to kill them all.Another trainee says of ISIS, They kill, but why do that to women, why take mothers from their children? They dont have any humanity.She added that their lives have been fundamentally changed by the ISIS attacks, Before I wanted to be a journalist. Now I want to fight with the peshmerga.The groups founder, Xate, has put her musical career on hold. She leveraged her contacts in the Kurdish government to help her establish her brigade. She said, I send a message to Barzani [the Kurdish president.] I made this unit.We are ready to fight anytime. Take us to Shingal There is no human rights in Sinjar now, because of the situation.The Yazidis believe the sun protects them, hence the unofficial name of the group: Sun Girls.
