For some reason, unlike some other species, Painted Ladies don't often open their wings and hold them in the horizontal position for long; the most common behavior (in my experience), is that they sit with their wings folded upward which shows their ventral (underside) markings.

The Blue Jays were photographed in my back yard which is on the edge of a forested area in Philly -- we have a huge park system much of which is wooded, with streams and two rivers!
And hey, it's only 1:47 PM -- who knows what will get in front of my lens before the sun goes down?
Thank you so much!
Let me ask what others on the site have asked

Here I am Mac.
Love the Bluejay photos..The ''Painted Lady'', is certainly much more beautiful than many of the ''Painted Ladies'' that I've seen over the years.

That is a spectacular photo Mac.
Thank you; it's why I plant Zinnias in my front yard every year -- you never know who might drop by.
Were the photos of the Bluejays taken in your yard?
Actually, IMO, their underside markings are more intricate and interesting than the upper ones.

You're not the only person who can take photos of blue jays. Here's my photo of a blue jay at bat - it's a hit.
It's not Carter - Carter was a right-handed hitter.
Yes, I know -- I'm painfully aware of that.
Don't worry, I won't gloat.
Heck of a nice back yard Mac.
