The world's biggest engines - fascinating information
Category: Health, Science & Technology
Via: buzz-of-the-orient • 12 years ago • 6 commentsMy brother just emailed this to me. It is an article about the engines that are used for super-tanker ships and others. I had never seen anything like these before, and it was something I had never really thought about (perhaps because I've never been a passenger on a large ship), but now I've learned something I would never have otherwise even thought about, and I really feel I have expanded my knowledge about this kind of technology - it's very gratifying.
Click this link to read the article, which comes with many photos showing the stages of construction of these massive engines.

The scale of these engines: wow but I guess on the ocean it evens out.
Good stuff Buzz. This is the industry (container ships/port operations) I was in for 40 years. The fuel used is called ''bunker fuel''. Depending on the string of vessels(number)your ran, your fuel bill could equal the nationaldebtquickly.
The latest generation of container ships carry 10,800 TEU's. (20 ft containers), and are larger then an aircraft carrier.
The cranes we used to unload them were 12 stories tall.
Love this shit.
This is a really fun article. Makes the engine in my truck look like a toy even if they look much the same. I don't think I would want to be standing anywhere near one of those when it was running.
No flame, it is not.
Sorry, the largest new vessels are 14,000 TEU's.
Makes me wonder what an oil/filter/lube costs on one of those babies?
And where's the drain plug?
