6831_discussions.jpg Want to spend the rest of your life on Mars? You can apply to do so now.

Mars One, a non-profit organization that plans to send humans on a one-way trip to establish a permanent settlement on Mars in 2023, began accepting online applications Monday.

"We are very excited about launching the selection program," said Bas Landorp, co-founder and CEO of the Netherlands-based group, in a statement announcing the start of the selection process. "This is an international mission and it is very important for the project that anyone anywhere can ask themselves: Do I want this? Am I ready for this? If the answer is yes then we want to hear from you."

This exemplifies the feeling of the person who said: "Stop the world, I want to get off." The way things are going in this world these days, the possibility of moving to Mars becomes very attractive.

Are they only taking applications, or can I nominate some people?

This guy is ready to sign up - read his story. It's fun.

Do you have the right stuff for mission to Mars?

By the year 2023, my eldest daughter will be wrapping up her PhD (at age 16), my youngest will have just turned pro in the WTA, and the time will be right for an early retirement. On Mars.

It's sandy, scenic, quiet, and with some work could easily support a lively sports bar and comfortable coffee house. There's no denying it's the ultimate exotic travel destination, which is why I'm poised to sign on with Mars One , whichbegan accepting online astronaut applications Monday.

Want to sign up, Buzz?Grin.gif It couldn't hurt, could it? We are going to die one way or another, why not at least make it an adventure? Think about the possible ways we could die - road accident, cancer, gunshot, terrorist explosions on the ground or in the air....and we won't be able to choose our hour of death with any of those, but with this...voila! We are fully prepared!

It's unlikely I'd make it to launch date, and I don't think because of my age I would qualify even if I did. But if you're intending to go, I'll have someone send you my ashes.

Hmmmm any chance we could get all those politicians to go? I mean they would be able to get the atmosphere a start, what with all the hot air they spew!
