Hell's Canyon, An unexpected journey.

Okay, this might be better than the slide show from aunt Thelma's vacation, but that is what it is.

I had a job in Lewiston Idaho, I flew in by puddle jumper, and we finished early. I tried to get a flight out, the change would be $1200. Looks like I an in Idaho for another day... what to do ?

I picked up the tourist brochures from the lobby of the motel, and there was one for a jetboat tour of Hell's Canyon on the Snake River. Umm sit all day watching HBO reruns or go for a ride ? Lord willing, I won't be back here again, might as well take a ride.

I bought one of those waterproof disposable cameras at the dock, and these were the results. Not John Muir, but some have merit. Enjoy Hell's Canyon.

But it is on a scale to defy belief. The remnants are Salt Lake in Utah. Old Faithful may be a nice attraction, but there is a beast sleeping under Yellowstone. We as a species may not see the other side of that awakening.

Very nice.

I've horse packed and hunted Elk in that neck of the woods and it is indeed lovely land.

Thanks for the images.

Now, why wouldn't you want to go back there 84? That's gorgeous country. As the old timers used to say, "Great for men and dogs but hell on women and horses".

I find the satire in the fact I went to install the latest technology, and learned about ancient geology, portions of which I had no knowledge of, at the time. I have had an interest in the geology for some time, but this was a slap in the face for what I did not know. The best part was it was an accident because I could not get a flight out from a one horse town. And the horse was booked.

I could not expense the boat trip in good faith but a day off and a trip that was worth a 100 bucks to me was ok, I got paid for the day in hours, I wont make them pay for a playday.

I could have been just as easy been in a closet soldering wires at 4 am hoping to make the scheduled flight at 8 am on Friday, to save the 1200 for missing the flight. In retrospect, I should have expensed the boat ride, I saved 1100 by taking it. Those details rarely make it the final reports, given to the accountants. Best $100 bucks I ever spent.

The volcanic and hydrological history of the region operates at a scale few can even begin to comprehend. I don't. Yellowstone will be heard from again, I hope not in my life. It will blow taking a third of of the west out, Mt. St, Helens was a reminder of the true beast. We do now know the nature of the beast, but they are still there. New Madrid and all we don't know boggles the mind. Only the arrogance of man can look at the geologic evidence and say it's gonna be a nice day tomorrow.

It may very well be. These things happen on a timescale we can not predict at this time, but we are due on a planetary scale. It could happen tomorrow, it could be in 10,000 years. It will happen though. I have survived a couple of large earthquakes... My city has recovered as well.We are still waiting for the BIG ONE. Again it could be tonight, or in 50 years, I prefer the 50 year option,as the perspective from 6 feet under would have less impact.

I apologize for going a tad morbid, but that is where I am.

I can recover from that comment. First off there is many things that will will kill me before I kill myself by my own hand. I would like to prefer pork fat, but I am willing to negotiate.

I can state clearly here. My Life is my own and I shall not surrender it to someone like me.

This sounds much worse than it is, I have renewed my focus, it will work or not, but I am done with the dark side.

Then I won't have to question My descisions in any case.

That is an absolutely fabulous trip through an area I will never see in person, and you did a great job of recording it. Thanks for the voyage.
