Google Chrome and Shockwave Crashes: Fix Em!

I have been having a lot of problems Lately with the Shockwave Flash player crashing/operating slowly while using Chrome. So, today, I went looking for a solution because I found the behavior quite unacceptable. Luckily I didn't have to look that far for an answer to why it was behaving as it was and providing a potential fix.

From the article:

If you use Google Chrome you may have become used to the Shockwave Flash plugin crashing. Our Helproom Expert explains how to solve the problem of Shockwave Flash crashing in Google Chrome.

QUESTION Can you help resolve the regular crashing of Shockwave Flash in Google Chrome? zsolutions4u

HELPROOM ANSWER Google Chrome, unlike other browsers , has its own version of Adobe Flash Player built in. If you're also running another web browser that requires a downloaded version of Adobe Flash player to be installed, the two versions of the software are likely to be causing a conflict.

To check Google Chrome's configuration, type about:plugins into the address bar and press Enter. This will bring up a page of information about all the plug-ins currently configured within Google Chrome.

Look for the Flash section. If it states that you're using two or more files, you have more than one Flash plug-in installed.

At the top right of the page you'll see the word Details'. Click the plus sign next to this to reveal more information.

The filename of each plug-in will be listed next to Location. Look at this information, and you'll see that one is stored under [Your User Folder]AppData\Local\Google\Chrome. This is Chrome's integrated plug-in. The other will be under C:\Windows\...' .

The path names used will vary depending on your version of Windows , but one will be stored with Chrome's application data and the other in a Windows system folder.

If both these files offer a Disable link, both are active and likely to be the cause of your browser crashes.

You can now choose which player you want to retain, by clicking Disable on the other one. Chrome will now use whichever version is enabled on your PC.

Yeah, this is a good tip, especially for Chrome users. After disabling the "pepper" version of Flash you will find that you still encounter Flash crashes, but not as severe and recovery is quicker.

Yup; had this exact same issue a couple of months ago. What I don't get is why it is even happening. I mean, I know why; but, why is is even an issue? I have been running players for years and this particular issue wasn't a problem until just recently.

The best way to fix these crashes, and they were happening to me all the time.

Is use FireFox and ditch Chrome!

So you went from Chrome to Firefox? How was that transition? No problem with security flaws in Firefox?

I thinking of doing that.... I downloaded the newest version of FF the other day...

Nope, not that I've seen. I would never, ever use IE, however.

FF is great.

Plus, hate to say this, but am getting very, very leery of Google. Hell, they're pretty much reading your e-mails at gmail to specifically target ads to you, and they do the same thing with Chrome. I despise that.

I've gone to outlook.com (great so far) as a replacement for gmail, though I have kept my yahoo account as well. Of course, 99.999% of my e-mails are through work.

Google is going to rule the world, I know, I just don't want to contribute to its ascension any longer.

Make sure you have the most recent Flash update (within the last week).

Sure, I still get Flash crash, but it's only a little time delay, at worse I have to reload the screen. Before I would have to reboot the browser. But as you say, Google has no excuse for not rectifying this situation.

I was an old Navigator user then went to FF when Nav stopped being supported... I had a lot of hang ups with FF, slow loading, app hangups, etc.. then in '08 went to google when it was still in beta ... have even tried Opera... maybe now back to FF for a while to see how that goes again...

Gee, thanks!

Same here. I still refuse to use IE, too easily hacked, open to viruses, malware.

precisely... one of the main reasons.... plus it just seems bulky and slow... chrome zipped... still does pretty good...

even thinking of dumping windows for Linux for a while to change things up...

really old aye??

Gee, thanks!

I can only speak for myself... not others...and really that was in terms of age of browsers...

I'm using Firefox and have been having the same problem of late. I went back to an earlier version of Flash Player but so far it hasn't helped much. Guess I'll just keep noodling the problem til it rectifies itself......

I use Chrome exclusively at home simply for speed. The only place I have to use IE is at work. Never used Firefox, but some of my colleagues at work have. I'll talk to them and see what they say.

Using Chrome specifically to avoid having Flash installed on any of 5 systems. Never any video related crashes or otherwise.

Loved Firefox and all of the available extensions but Flash became too much of a problem and perpetually updating mess.

Best solution is to back up bookmarks, uninstall all browsers, re-install the latest version of Chrome, import the book marks and leave "stand alone" Flash off your system.

HTML5 cannot become the standard fast enough.

Respectfully...No.

Chrome is faster, more secure, less prone to crash, has better built-in downloading and updated more frequently. Firefox's only advantage is more numerous extensions available.

Used Firefox religiously for years but recent research moved me to use Chrome exclusively. Chrome keeps Flash "partitioned" within the browser and much less likely to effect security, processes, programs, applications, etc.

Brolly,

I did this when I read this article and it worked great. But the last couple of weeks it has started crashing again so I checked it tonight and now I don't have the Google built in one at all??? I only have 2 in my C: file. I updated to the newest Chrome version and it is still not there. What do I do now???

I will have to check into that.

But off the top of my head, I would say if there are two on your c: disk then turn one or the other of them off.... You should only need one to run the shockwave extensions.

I did turn one off. I just checked my work puter and the same thing. I have a pepper and a macromed in my C: file. I think I turned the macromed one off. If you have any more info on this it would be greatly appreciated.Grin.gif
