Germany just voted to recognize the Armenian genocide. Turkey is furious.
You'd think that the German parliament, of all parliaments, would be able to vote to commemorate a genocide without stirring up a controversy.
Yet Tuesday morning, when the Bundestag passed a resolution labeling the 1915 slaughter of Armenians by the Ottoman Empire a "genocide," the Turkish government reacted with fury. Turkey recalled its ambassador from Berlin, and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan threatened to take more steps to punish Germany. "We will do whatever is necessary to resolve this issue," he warned ominously.
The vote also comes at a critical time in German-Turkish relations, as the two countries are absolutely vital in resolving the Syrian refugee crisis. So this isn't just an academic dispute between the two countries; the stakes are real for the entire European continent.
What is it about Turkey that reminds me of Cartman....
Erasing history has come into vogue in the Islamic world.
This reversal is overdue.
Noit just the Islamic world that erases history. UNESCO does it as well (but then isn't the UN the dog whose tail is wagged by the Islamic world?)
Wonderful first step. Would love to see the US do the same.
Why do you think Germany was the first to make this announcement ?
I'm thinking along the lines of the immigration fiasco.
Payback for being a poor actor.
Is that anything like : "See ... we're not the only ones !" ?
Bravo Germany. Now let's see what other countries have the guts to tell the truth. It won't be America as long as Obama is in control - he would never cross his good friend Erdogan.
Other nations shoukd follow and be damned with the sensitivity of the Turkish genocidists.
